The junior men and women of the Newport Aquatic Center powered
through sheets of rain in Sunday’s Cal Cup rowing regatta at the Long
Beach Marine Stadium. Competing against Mother Nature and five other
Southern California teams in a 1,500-meter race, NAC made an
impressive showing.
The NAC men’s team blew away the competition with a total of 66
points, easily beating the Long Beach team which scored 30 points.
Out of 20 men’s boats entered, 12 first-place medals were
captured, including the men’s varsity eight, the men’s junior varsity
eight and the men’s novice eight boats. The junior varsity eight and
three other boats took second-place wins.
The official scoring awarded 50 points to the NAC women’s team,
just behind the first place Long Beach, team which earned 58 points.
The women entered 20 boats with seven first-place wins, including
the junior varsity eight, the freshmen eight, the lightweight eight
and the novice eights. The women also captured six second-place wins,
including the varsity eight and the junior varsity eight.
This was the beginning of NAC’s racing season. Within two weeks,
the teams will travel to Northern California to compete against the
elite Bay Area teams at Redwood Shores.
