CdM on to semis

Barry Faulkner

The CIF Southern Section Division II girls water polo quarterfinal

Tuesday between visiting El Dorado High and Corona del Mar was

delayed 30 minutes due to concerns over lightning.

But the real storm didn’t start until the second quarter, when the

top-seeded Sea Kings scored four times to open a 5-0 halftime lead.

CdM, seeking its fourth consecutive CIF title, its third straight

in Division II, scored another four in the third quarter en route to

a 10-2 triumph.

El Dorado (13-15) did not score until Sara Davila converted a

four-meter penalty shot with 4:16 left in the game, after CdM Coach

Aaron Chaney had begun liberal substitutions.

The victory puts CdM into Friday’s semifinals, against either No.

4-seeded Sunny Hills or Peninsula.

But it did not particularly please Chaney, who has not lost in 14

playoff games since taking over for John Vargas before the 2001-02

campaign. Chaney is now 94-28 at CdM.

“I think we can still play better,” Chaney said. “We missed a lot

of opportunities, on breakaways and with bad passes. But our defense

was fine.”

The Golden Hawks might use another word after struggling to even

attempt shots against the hosts’ active, overplaying defensive style.

CdM goalie Brittany Fullen finished with nine saves in three

quarters, but most of those came from merely catching the visitors’

long, desperation heaves to beat the shot clock.

Senior Katlin Kubas and junior Camille Hewko had three goals each

to lead the winners, who received two goals from senior Jordan Anae.

Kate Murphy, CdM’s third goalie, stopped a fourth-quarter penalty

shot to draw a roar from her teammates and finished with three saves.
