Keeping an eye on your health

GREER WYLDER
At Newport Mesa Optometry, Dr. Jeffrey Safarik’s top priority is eye
health.
He provides thorough eye exams that can detect eye diseases, eye
conditions and provides lenses and contacts for vision care.
Unlike most optometrist offices, Safarik even has a pachymetry
device that detects the thickness of the cornea.
Safarik also seeks out the latest in frames and sunglasses.
“I’m always refreshing my stock, and I try to keep on edge,”
Safarik said.
Safarik said the eyewear trend is toward bigger frames, yet he
also carries classic styles and frames that flatter a lot of faces.
Newport Mesa Optometry carries collections by Kate Spade, Calvin
Klein, Prada, Giorgio Armani and Gucci, as well as retro-look styles
from Dolabany of Australia and Revolution frames with magnetic clips.
Safarik chose a visually appealing, boutique-like atmosphere,
rather than a sterile visiting room, to best present his selection of
designer eyewear.

GET IN BEFORE IT’S GONE
After 58 years in business, the locally beloved Atkinson’s Men’s
Clothing store will close on Feb. 15. A storewide sale is in
progress.
The family-owned store has served as a favorite neighborhood shop,
where regulars felt at home.
Many customers had store accounts that allowed hassle-free
billing. Owner Gordon Atkinson’s loyal customers enjoyed attentive
personal service, and chose from quality traditional clothing that
perfectly fit their style. 3430 Via Lido in Newport Beach. (949)

THE ANTIQUE LOOK
Looking for bargains on home furnishings on consignment? Stop by
Melange, Etc., where unique, one-a-kind-treasures get scooped up
fast.
Co-owner Mike Meade says his 2-year-old shop receives new items
constantly, and the cream of the crop sell in about two to three
days.
Melange focuses on modern home decor, although it does have a few
collectibles and antiques.
“Furniture has to have three elements: style, condition and
quality,” Meade says.
“If it’s missing any one of those elements, it’s going to fall off
the mark.”
Meade asks consignees to bring in small furnishing pieces or
photos of large furniture, so he will be able to assess what the
piece could sell for.
“We provide a way for people to dispose of items, when they don’t
want the hassle and inconvenience of selling at their home,” Meade
said.
Open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Saturday. 1584 Newport Blvd. in Costa Mesa. (949) 650-5500.

FOR PEET’S SAKE
Peet’s Coffee & Tea, a Bay Area institution, opened a Costa Mesa
shop in September.
Nearly 40 years ago, Alfred Peet opened the first Peet’s store in
Berkeley. Now the company has nearly 90 stores across the country --
even back East in Boston.
Peet’s is sought out by connoisseurs for its high quality,
fresh-roasted coffee beans and proprietary teas. Peet’s roasts coffee
beans the old-fashioned way -- by hand, in small batches. The
company’s passion for artisan coffees and teas attracts a loyal
following, dubbed Peetniks, who have Peet’s delivered on a regular
basis.
Peet’s also makes fresh coffee drinks, teas and serves bakery
items. Coffee- and tea-related gifts and accessories are available
too.
Open 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday to Friday; 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday. 424 E. 17th St. in Costa Mesa. (949) 335-0670.
