Here are some issues the council considered Tuesday.
MEDICAL OFFICE PARKING
The council postponed any changes to the city’s requirements for
medical/dental office parking. The proposal was to increase the
amount of parking required per square foot of office space. While
parking is at a premium, especially at medical offices, the city has
a limited amount of land and a growing need for medical facilities.
WHAT IT MEANS
Council members will take up the issue at a Feb. 8 meeting, when
they’re likely to carefully consider a move that would ease parking
problems but could cramp the plans of medical office developers.
MARINAPARK AD HOC COMMITTEE
The council voted unanimously to approve Mayor Steve Bromberg’s 14
choices for members of an ad hoc committee that will consider future
uses of the Marinapark site. The city-owned property now hosts a
mobile home park, American Legion post, Girl Scout house and other
facilities. Voters in November rejected a plan to build a luxury
hotel there. Bromberg will chair the committee, which will include
two other council members, six members of city commissions and five
members of the public.
WHAT IT MEANS
No meeting dates have been set, but once it convenes, the
committee will look at options for Marinapark. Suggestions have
included creating a public park or a marina, and public input will be
welcomed. For a complete list of committee members, visit the city
website at https://www.city.newportbeach.ca.us.
TRANSPORTATION GRANTS
The city is taking the first steps toward replacing its traffic
signal control system and refurbishing several major streets by
asking for county and state grants for the projects. The council
voted unanimously to request about $2.8 million from Measure M funds,
which come from Orange County’s half-cent sales tax, and $44,800 from
the California Integrated Waste Management Board for road projects in
the city.
WHAT IT MEANS
If the grants are received, the city will perform major street
rehabilitation on parts of Hospital Road, Bristol Street, Jamboree
Road and other major thoroughfares, and new traffic signal equipment
will be installed at a number of intersections.
