Surfer dies near Pier following aneurysm
A long-time member of the surfing community died of a brain
aneurysm Friday while surfing near the Huntington Beach Pier, police
said.
Carl Hayward, 48, of San Clemente, was not breathing when he was
pulled from the surf after other surfers noticed him face down in the
water south of the Pier at about 12:50 p.m., police said.
Lifeguards and paramedics performed CPR on Hayward and he was
transported to Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach where he was pronounced
dead, police said.
Bicycle not built for
two means confrontation
A dispute over a bicycle in the 15700 block of Goldenwest Street
on Sunday ended in a violent assault, police said.
One man hit another man with a knife handle at about 4 p.m. after
he was confronted for trying to steal a bike on the campus of Golden
West College, police said.
When John Hayen, of Midway City, confronted Steven Anderson, of
Santa Ana, police said that Anderson pulled out a knife and used the
knife handle to injure Hayen.
“It was obviously clear to the officers who took the report and
did the investigation that the bicycle did not belong to the
suspect,” said Sgt. Mike Kelly of the Huntington Beach Police
Department.
Though Anderson used a knife, Hayen did not suffer any stab
wounds, but did have several cuts on his face and the back of his
head, police said.
Hayen was transported to UCI Medical Center where he was treated
and released, police said.
Anderson was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly
weapon, petty theft of the bicycle and for violation of his parole,
police said.

Department.
At 11:55 p.m. police received a call that a group of 25 or 30
people were fighting in the parking lot at TC’s Cocktail Lounge,
police said. When police officers approached the crowd the fight
broke up, but officers saw a man walk up to another man and hit him
