Allison Long hit two free throws with two seconds left as the Corona
del Mar High girls basketball team held on for their first Pacific
Coast League victory this season following a 56-55 win over host
Calvary Chapel of Santa Ana Thursday night.
Long shot free throws in place of Megan Benbow, who left the game
after injuring her head as she attempted a layup on the Sea Kings’
final possession following a length-of-the-court pass from Katie
Schulte, CdM Coach Scott Kahawai said.
Schulte paced the Sea Kings (9-10, 1-2 in league) while Allie
Duernberger and Kristina Wayte each tallied nine points. Wayte
grabbed eight rebounds while Benbow added eight points and three
steals.

Sixth straight for CdM
* SOCCER: Jessica Mazura scored the eventual game-winner on a
penalty kick while Kelly Morgan added an insurance goal as the
visiting Corona del Mar High girls soccer team earned their sixth
straight victory with a 3-1 Pacific Coast League victory over Calvary
Chapel Thursday at Orange Coast College.
Lexi Henson put away a loose ball the box after a scramble to give
the Sea Kings (8-7, 3-0 in league) a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute
before Calvary (6-7-1, 0-3) tied it at 1 in the 50th minute. CdM
goalkeeper Katie Schiesser made four saves.
The Sea Kings host Northwood, which was also undefeated in league
heading into play Thursday, at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.
Newport edges Irvine
* SOCCER: Amy Klippert redirected a pass from Krystal Wright into
the net and the Newport Harbor High girls soccer team made it stand
as the Sailors sealed their first Sea View League victory of the
season with a 1-0 win over Irvine Thursday.
Wright sent the pass into the middle of the 18-yard box and
Klippert finished the play for the goal in the 23rd minute.
Goalkeeper Mary Gibberson stopped five shots, including a breakaway
chance by the Vaqueros (2-1 in league) in the 65th minute to help the
Sailors (5-4-1, 1-1-1).
Newport hosts Laguna Hills in a league match at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Sailors snap losing skid
* BASKETBALL: The Newport Harbor High girls basketball team
cruised to a 52-38 Sea View League victory over visiting Irvine
Thursday night to snap a five-game losing streak.
The Sailors (10-9, 1-2 in league) were led by Vanessa Miller’s
game-high 15 points and three three-pointers. Kristi Eddington added
14 and Ivy Melo registered 10 points for Newport Harbor.
The Sailors host Laguna Hills Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Eagles clip Santa Ana
* SOCCER: Freshman center halfback Sarah Braunsdorf scored in the
25th minute on an assist from Marina Abdul as the Estancia High girls
soccer team edged host Santa Ana, 1-0, in Golden West League action
Wednesday.
Estancia goalkeeper Marci Kirchberg recorded four saves.
The Eagles (5-1-3, 1-0-2 in league) travel to Saddleback at 3:15
p.m. today in a league makeup game.
Seahawks stop Mesa
* BASKETBALL: Ocean View High’s girls basketball team outscored
visiting Costa Mesa, 18-9, in the fourth quarter en route to a 50-36
Golden West League victory Thursday.
Deanna Sanchez led the Mustangs (5-13, 1-3 in league) with 16
points while Tracy Bjelland added eight. D.J. Butler, who stands
6-foot-2, led all scorers with 22 points for Ocean View (8-9, 2-1).
Eagles fly short of win
* BASKETBALL: The Estancia High girls basketball team lost, 38-27,
Thursday to visiting Westminster in a Golden West League game, the
second straight loss for the Eagles and the seventh in eight games.
Be Diep continued her strong play, putting up 12 points for the
hosts. Nicolle Wilson shipped in 10 points and Marisela Sandoval
provided energetic defense for Estancia (4-12, 1-2 in league).
Estancia will visit Saddleback Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Highlanders halt ‘Eaters
* BASKETBALL: The visiting UC Riverside women’s basketball team
used a 24-4 run at the end of the first half to blow open a close
game and won its third in a row with a 64-44 Big West Conference
victory over UC Irvine Thursday.
Lauren Yadon and Melissa Jacob each led the Anteaters (1-12, 0-5
in conference) with 11 points apiece while UC Riverside’s Kemie Nkele
tallied her conference-leading seventh double-double with 16 points
and 15 rebounds.
UCI finished 17 of 59 from the field (28.8%) while the Highlanders
(7-5, 3-1) were 24 of 54 (44.4%).
