CdM handles Tars in Battle of the Bay

The Corona del Mar High frosh/soph boys soccer team defeated host

Newport Harbor, 3-1, Wednesday in a nonleague matchup.

Mitchell Williams scored all three goals for the Sea Kings

(4-0-1), two off of throw-in assists from Tevor Gladych and the third

on a penalty kick.

Ryan Caughren, Thomas Dialynas and Greg Walonsky played at

midfield for CdM, while the defense was led by Dean Pospisol, Riley

Sullivan, Kevin Kottke, Nick Taylor and Gladych. Goalie Jaffter

Kattan had four saves.

Paulo Iaccarino, Brian Nicols and Jeff Carlson all had shots on

goal.

Girls soccer

Junior varsity

The Estancia High junior varsity girls soccer team defeated

Westminster, 2-1, in Golden West League action Thursday to achieve

its fifth win under first-year coach Kara DeMille.

Nathali Martinez scored the first goal for the Eagles (5-2-1, 2-0

in league), heading a pass from Susie Carmona into the net. Karyn Hay

scored the second goal off of a pass from Aracili Ceja.

Bianca Vargas and Alejandra Ceros led the defense while goalies

Kaelyn Davis and Ashton Henderson had two saves apiece.

Boys basketball

Freshman

The Corona del Mar High freshman boys basketball team defeated

host Tesoro, 56-37, Friday in the Sea Kings’ Pacific Coast League

opener.

Omeed Alemi led Corona del Mar (13-2, 1-0 in league) with 17

points while Joe Eberhard had 14. Eric Rask hit two three-pointers

and finished with eight points and two assists.

Junior varsity

The Newport Harbor High junior varsity boys basketball team

defeated Foothill, 64-39, to open Sea View League play Friday on the

Knights’ floor.

Sophomore Matt Helfrich led the winners (9-5, 1-0 in league) with

15 points, while junior Jordan Schunk contributed 11 points to the lopsided triumph for Coach Bob Torribio’s Sailors.

Junior varsity

Austin Evett scored a team-high 16 points, including four

three-pointers, while David Root tallied 10 points as the host Corona

del Mar High junior varsity boys basketball team defeated Estancia,

57-47, Saturday.

John Joyce tallied nine points while Joe Amin added eight for CdM

(5-9).
