Schmidt surpasses plateau

Sophomore Kelly Schmidt eclipsed the 1,000-point mark and the host
Vanguard University women’s basketball team moved into sole
possession of first place in the Golden State Athletic Conference
after sending Point Loma Nazarene to its first loss of the season
following a 74-53 triumph Thursday.
Lion point guard Lisa Faulkner led all scorers with 19 points and
added nine assists while teammate Schmidt finished with 18 points --
she has 1,001 points in her Vanguard career -- and eight rebounds.
Lacey Burns scored 13 points for the second-ranked Lions (13-1, 4-0
in the GSAC). The fourth-ranked Sea Lions fell to 13-1, 3-1.
Mesa spreads wealth
* SOCCER: Jenny Sparks and Jasmin Day each scored two goals while
Nilani Duarte added the other to lead the Costa Mesa High girls
soccer team to a 5-1 Golden West League victory over Ocean View
Thursday.
Duarte and Day tallied three and two assists, respectively, for
the Mustangs (9-2, 4-0 in league), who forged a 4-0 halftime lead.
Mesa goalkeeper Kindra Bailey made eight saves.
Elias sparks Sea Kings
* SOCCER: Freshman midfielder Alex Elias scored in the 65th minute
Thursday as the Corona del Mar High girls soccer team edged visiting
Tesoro, 1-0, in the Pacific Coast League opener.
After a cross from Jessica Mazura and scramble in front of the
goal, the ball popped loose and Elias volleyed it into the side
netting as the Sea Kings improved to 6-7 overall.
Sailors rebound, tie
* SOCCER: Senior Tayler Giacomaro scored on a penalty kick with
two minutes remaining to cap an impressive comeback by the Newport
Harbor High girls soccer team, which forced a 3-3 tie against host
Foothill in the Sea View League opener Thursday.
Giacomaro scored twice while freshman Emily Ohlhaver added one
goal as the Sailors (4-3-1) erased a 3-0 halftime deficit. Amy
Klippert drew the foul that led to the aforementioned penalty shot.
Mary Gibberson made seven saves in goal for the Sailors.
Burnette paces Lions
* BASKETBALL: Five players scored in double-figures as the
Vanguard University men’s basketball team defeated visiting Point
Loma Nazarene University, 82-67, Thursday night in Golden State
Athletic Conference action.
Tim Burnette had a game-high 18 points for the Lions (7-6, 2-2 in
conference). Levi Seekins added 17 points, followed by Brian
Roberts’s 12 points.
Eagles tie on late goal
* SOCCER: The Estancia High girls soccer team remained unbeaten in
Golden West League play, earning a 1-1 tie against host Westminster
Thursday. Estancia (4-1-2, 0-0-2 in league) trailed, 1-0, with five
minutes left in the game when Taylor West sent Sandra Lopez’s
crossing pass into the bottom-right corner of the net.
Mustangs fall to Saints
* BASKETBALL: The Costa Mesa High girls basketball team connected
on 11 of 57 field-goal attempts (19%) and 14 of 29 free-throw tries
(48%) in its 45-38 loss to host Santa Ana in the Golden West League
opener Thursday night.
Bethany Vergara scored a team-high 13 points, followed by Tracy
Bjelland’s 10 points for Costa Mesa (5-11, 1-1 in league).
Anteaters lose by 20
* BASKETBALL: The UC Irvine women’s basketball team had four
players with double-digit scoring, but it wasn’t enough as host Cal
State Northridge won, 81-61, Thursday night in a Big West Conference
game.
The Anteaters (1-10, 0-3 in conference) only had eight healthy
players. Lauren Yadon led UCI with 19 points while Angie Ned tallied
16 and Melissa Jacob and Ashley Biggins each added 10 points. Biggins
added 10 rebounds for her third double-double this season.
The Matadors (7-3, 3-0) were led by LaJoyce King’s career-high 21
points.
Foothill trumps Tars
* BASKETBALL: The Newport Harbor High girls basketball team could
not recover from a slow start en route to a 57-24 loss at Foothill in
the Sea View League opener.
The Sailors (9-7, 0-1 in league) were outscored, 35-4, in the
first half, including a 19-0 showing in the second quarter.
Foothill center Lauren Bagley poured in a game-high 26 points.
Mustangs net big win
* WATER POLO: Christine Twohig tallied eight goals while Sarah
Bowman scored five times as the Costa Mesa High girls water polo team
cruised to an 18-2 Golden West League victory over Westminster
Wednesday.
Senior Allyson Harris and Annie Le each scored twice while Chandra
Malapira tallied one goal for the Mustangs (8-3). Kelly Gentling made
11 saves for the winners.
Sage Hill dominates
* SOCCER: Starting goalkeeper Laura Gordon scored four goals as
the Sage Hill School girls soccer team defeated visiting Fairmont
Prep, 10-0, Wednesday in a nonleague match. The Lightning (10-0)
raced to a 5-0 lead headed into the second half when Gordon was
pulled from her goalkeeping position and placed as a forward.
