Performing arts center stages disappointment

I think the Orange County Performing Arts Center is really going

down the wrong road.

Its “Rent” production was third-rate. Matthew Bourne’s

“Nutcracker” was a huge disappointment and definitely wasn’t even for

children.

And now to find out that it’s not going to have a full orchestra

for “Oliver” is very disappointing.

I think the last thing it ought to be worrying about is building

another venue when it can’t even maintain the quality of the venue

that it has.

Very, very disappointing.

And I think that all the people in Orange County are going to end

up having to drive to Los Angeles again to see quality performances.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Members of the Orange County Musicians’ Assn.

gathered outside of the Orange County Performing Arts Center Tuesday

to protest the production “Oliver!” for the use of Sinfonia, a

machine that generates music that augments the sound of live

musicians. Protesters said that the device wrongly replaces the heart

and soul of live musicians.

Fullerton airport bid shows good leadership

The city of Fullerton is to be commended for its leadership in

asking for the El Toro air station (“Fullerton pitches its own base

proposal,” Daily Pilot, Dec. 10).

I’m glad the Department of Transportation is looking into this

local fray carefully, because we need an El Toro International

Airport for 30 million annual passengers in the 21st century.

The purpose of good government is to do for the people what they

can not do for themselves.
