Locals earn All-CIF honors
Three members of Edison High’s 2004 CIF-Southern Section Division
II girls’ volleyball team and one player from Huntington Beach High
have earned All-CIF-SS honors in the sport.
In addition, Edison coach Trent Jackson, who guided his squad to
the school’s first section title in girls’ volleyball, shared the
division’s Co-Coach of the Year award with South Torrance coach
Robert Kutch.
Named to the first team from Edison was senior middle blocker
Colleen Burke and sophomore right-side Kari Pestolesi.
Second team selections included Edison senior outside hitter
Ashley Collier and Huntington Beach junior setter Felicia Ciarelli.
In boys’ water polo, four local athletes were named to the
All-CIF-SS Division II team.
Second-team picks were Huntington Beach senior Robert Riker and
Edison junior Tanner Riley.
Third-team picks were Huntington Beach senior Bill Meripol and
Edison senior Travis Bee.
McLeod honored with CIF Character Award
Former AYSO Region 143 Commissioner Paul McLeod has been
recognized for integrity in athletics by the CIF-Southern Section
with a “Champion for Character” award.
McLeod, 50, has lived in Huntington Beach since 1979. He is
founder and chief executive officer of McLeod Enterprises, a
privately held, family-run firm with interests in media, real estate,
education and cuisine. He spent 21 years as a sportswriter at the Los
Angeles Times and has 32 years of overall experience in sports and
media.
“This award is being presented to you based on a recommendation
that cited you as exemplifying the very finest in writing that
reflect sportsmanship, character, integrity and athletics,”
CIF-Southern Section Commissioner Jim Staunton said. “This is truly
an honor.”
McLeod and his wife, Ellen, began their AYSO careers in 1987 as
coaches and referees and quickly moved into administration. They were
commissioners of the region from 1992-95. The pair went on to coach
and manage with the North Huntington Beach Futbol Club.

and officiates high school matches in the county.
He has also written for the Long Beach Press-Telegram and the
Orange County Register and served seven years as a media
representative for the athletic department at Cypress College, where
more than a dozen publications he created earned top state or
national honors. He is the holder of a lifetime community college
teaching credential and has taught communication and physical
education courses at Cypress, Fullerton and Orange Coast colleges. He
is active as a volunteer with the Journalism Assn. of Community
Colleges.
