Shopping ‘Island’

for the right film

Shoppers who visit Bloomingdale’s at Fashion Island today can help

the Newport Beach Film Festival and receive a discount and gift cards

for themselves.

The “Shopping Works Wonders” promotion, a partnership between

Bloomingdale’s and the film festival, allows shoppers to get a 10%

discount on their purchases and a $15 gift card for every $150 they

spend. After they’re done shopping, people can show their receipts

from today’s purchases at the store’s welcome desk, and the store

will donate 10% of the total to the Newport Beach Film Festival.

The 10% discount passes and gift cards are also available at the

welcome desk by the staircase on the store’s first floor. For

information, call the film festival at (949) 253-2880 or Fashion

Island, on Newport Center Drive in Newport Beach, at (949) 721-2000.

Proposed district textbooks on display

English, foreign language, math and science textbooks the

Newport-Mesa Unified School District board is considering for grades

7 through 12 will be on display through Jan. 25 at the Sanborn

Instructional Media Center, 2985-C Bear St., Costa Mesa.

The district approves textbooks twice a year, said Assistant Supt.

for Curriculum and Instruction Barry Barowitz.

Administrative staff members plan to take the list of books to the

board in January for approval. The public is invited to look over the

books from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and make

comments about them, Barowitz said.

The textbooks were proposed by teachers at Newport-Mesa high

schools and include course disciplines in chemistry, Algebra 2,

geometry, statistics, advanced Spanish and comparative literature.
