Sea Kings roll in first round

The Corona del Mar High girls volleyball team, top-seeded in CIF

Southern Section Division III-A playoffs, swept visiting San Dimas,

25-7, 25-15, 25-14, in the first round Thursday night.

Lindsey Ensign paced the Sea Kings (22-5) with nine kills, 11

digs, one block and one service ace, while teammates Jordan Smith

(eight kills) and Traci Lawson (15 assists) sparked the offensive

attack against San Dimas (10-9).

Corona del Mar will play either San Marino or Santa Ynez in the

quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Saturday. A coin flip today will determine

the home team.

Carey sparks Newport

* Junior Bryana Carey’s serving was the difference in the Newport

Harbor High girls volleyball team’s 25-17, 23-25, 25-23, 25-15

victory over visiting Victor Valley in the second round of the CIF

Southern Section Division II-AA playoffs Thursday night.

The Sailors (14-12) went down 7-1 in the first game, but rallied

behind Carey’s serving to win, 25-17. Carey finished the match with

six aces and only one serving error to accompany her 11 kills.

Senior Kiley Hall had 16 kills and five digs, while sophomore Coco

Yokoyama had six kills and five digs. Senior Taryn Tarnutzer had

eight kills and 14 assists.

The Sailors visit El Dorado (14-13) in the quarterfinals Saturday

at 7 p.m.

Sage Hill stays alive

* The Sage Hill School girls volleyball team defeated host Mary

Star of the Sea, 25-22, 25-23, 22-25, 31-29, in the second round of

the CIF Southern Section Division IV-A playoffs Thursday evening.

Sage was down 22-15 in a pivotal game four, when Cat Dailey served

up eight-straight points to give the Lighting a 23-22 lead. Sage

(16-6) won that game, 31-29, to close out the match.

Dailey finished with 21 kills, four aces and 27 digs, while Vista

Murphy had 10 kills, 17 digs and two aces. Haywood Wright had eight

kills and seven blocks against Mary Star of the Sea (18-12).

The Lightning host Chadwick (15-5) in the quarterfinals Saturday

at 7 p.m.

Mesa finishes season

* The Costa Mesa High girls volleyball team lost to host Nordhoff,

25-12, 25-22, 26-24, in the first round of the CIF Southern Section

Division III-A playoffs Thursday evening.

The Mustangs finished their season 9-6.

Senior Lindsey Navarrette led Mesa with 10 kills, three aces and

13 digs, while junior Tracy Bjelland had eight kills. Sophomore

Danielle Morton had six blocks and Senior Jackie Havens had 24

assists against Nordhoff (12-4).
