Skimming along the silver screen

Capitalizing on their skim boarding environment, two Laguna teens
have created a film of the sport starring a host of locals.
Isaac Zoller, 17, and Ben Witte, 16, used digital video cameras
and fellow skim boarders to produce “A Feast of Friends,” a skim
boarding film that will premiere with two screenings at 7 and 8 p.m.
on Thursday, at the Laguna Beach South Coast Cinemas.
Zoller said the movie, which is just less than an hour long, is
purely about skim boarding. He and Witte filmed at local beaches like
10th Street, West Street and Aliso Beach.
“This is, like, the best town for skim boarding and it’s pretty
much what you do here,” said Zoller, who has been skim boarding for
seven years.
Witte said he has been skim boarding for two or three years and
lives along West Street, a prime skim boarding spot. “I just grew up
with it,” Witte said.
Witte says he surfs too, but prefers skim boarding because there
is more action.
“I like that it’s easy to do,” Zoller said, “you don’t need a lot,
you just need a board.”
Zoller said the footage is accompanied by the kind of music they
listen to.
“There’s 12 sections and each section has a different song,”
Zoller said.
The movie took about a year to film and two months to edit. It’s
not Witte’s first film -- he attended film school at UCLA during the
summer -- but it is his first on the subject of skim boarding.
The marketing mainly consisted of word-of-mouth and fliers at
school. According to Zoller the method has been successful. “They’re
amped on it.”
