Blue Waves finish gold season unbeaten

The Region 57 AYSO girls under-14 Corona del Mar Blue Waves sustained
an undefeated season by tying the CdM Purplicious, 2-2, in the final
matchup of the regular season Saturday.
Jackie Kingkade, assisted by Molly Vorwerck, scored the Waves’
first goal, with Vorwerck adding the second point later in the game.
As the only undefeated team, the Blue Waves will attempt to sustain
their unblemished record in the postseason playoffs that begin this
week.
* CdM Blue Waves 1, CdM Ninja Gumbys 1
Jackie Kingkade booted the Waves’ sole goal, assisted by Nekisa
Hag, while Laura Fleming, Kelly Gans and Molly Vorwerck anchored the
Waves’ effective defense Oct. 30. Jordan Team and Beth Arnesen
contributed strong play for the Ninja Gumbys.
* CdM Blue Waves 1, Costa Mesa Lawnmowers 1
Michelle Lancaster struck first for the Blue Waves, while Jackie
Kingkade anchored the defense, holding the Lawnmowers to their sole
goal Oct. 16. Molly Vorwerck and Laura Fleming made significant
contributions to the Waves’ offense and defense, respectively.
* CdM Blue Waves 3, Costa Mesa Storm 1
Michelle Lancaster netted the initial goal, assisted by Brittanny
Donahue Oct. 9. On a breakaway, Molly Vorwerck outran the Storm
defense and drove in the second goal, again assisted by the alert
Donahue. Annalise Moore capped the Blue Waves’ win with a breakaway
goal in the fourth quarter, while the Waves’ strong defense, sparked
by Laura Fleming and Kelly Gans, held the Costa Mesa team to one
goal.
* CdM Blue Waves 2, CdM Triple “S” 1
Striker Chelsea Waite scored both Waves’ goals on assists from
Molly Vorwerck and Annalise Moore on Oct. 2. The Blue Waves’ Jackie
Kingkade and Laura Fleming provided the defense to hold the Triple
“S” to one point.
In boys under-14 play:
* Blue Titans 4, Newport Beach 2
The Blue Titans’ top two scorers, Camden Nicholson and Ori Tabak,
tallied two goals each to lead the Titans past Newport Beach, 4-2.
The win secured a first-place finish in the league standings.
After trailing, 2-1, in the third quarter, the Blue Titans scored
three-straight goals to take the lead and establish the winning
score.
The Blue Titan’s solid defense of Eric Hansen, Michael Merline,
Andrew Iverson, David Broekelschen, Alex Merline, Anthony Francisco
and goalkeeper Brad Jones came together to shut out the Newport Beach
team in the second half.
The scoring opportunities for the Blue Titans were created by
forwards Kevin Wang and Zack Martin, with support from mid fielders
Ryan Casanova, Aria Mohammadi, Connor Gaughan and Scott Hansen.
The Blue Titans begin playoffs this weekend.
In boys under-12 play:
* Corona del Mar 7, Rancho Santa Margarita 0
The Corona del Mar boys under-12 soccer team remains in first
place in Coast Soccer League play with a 10-0 record after blanking
Rancho Santa Margarita, 7-0.
An early indirect kick taken by Colton Gyulay connected with Mason
Case, who passed to Kjell Wolker for an early goal. Gyulay scored two
more goals for a 3-0 lead at halftime.
Wolker scored early in the second, followed by Gyulay for a hat
trick. William Morrow, Brent Lawson and Jack Gorab executed precise
passing and ball control throughout the game. Taylor Ross scored a
goal that was denied by the referee, while Stevie Miller had multiple
shots on goal.
Mikey Pawell scored on a penalty kick and Brent Gray, Jensen
Rinehart, and Nick Curci dominated defensively. With a comfortable
6-0 lead and six minutes left to play, Brennan Anderson replaced
Logan Newett in goal. Newett scored a goal and Anderson made a save
for the victory.
* Corona del Mar 8, Irvine Lasers 0
One minute into the game, Mason Case took an indirect kick to
Steven Miller, who passed through to Blake Thomsen for the goal.
Jack Gorab, Taylor Ross, Mikey Pawell and Brennan Anderson all had
shots on goal, testing the Lasers goal keeper. Nick Curci sent a long
pass to Kjell Wolker, who passed to Colton Gyulay for a precise shot
on goal. Wolker scored twice more while Gyulay added another in the
first half for a 6-0 lead.
Taylor Ross kicked a goal on a penalty kick to begin the second
half. Brent Lawson, Jensen Rinehart, William Morrow and Brent Gray
anchored the defense. Goalie Logan Newett had seven saves, earning
his ninth-consecutive shutout this season.
In girls under-11 play:
* Corona del Mar 3, Aliso Viejo 0
Led by Andree Keith, Ashley Keligian and Hollace Barden, who each
scored a goal, the team controlled the game Sunday. Mackenzie Dalton
and Alison Ridge both assisted on goals while Pippa Saunders
preserved the shutout in goal.
* Corona del Mar 0, Tustin 0
Goalie Pippa Saunders led the team to a scoreless tie against
Tustin Saturday. Alyssa Williams, Marrisa Hergott, Sammy Knapp, Megan
Zwerling and Katie Bethel anchored the defense, holding Tustin to no
goals. Emma Kaye, Katie Yaru and Dana DeMiranda played on offense.
In boys under-10 play:
* The Stingers closed regular season play with a 2-1 victory
Saturday. Tomo Andry got the scoring started for the Stingers with a
strong attack from the right side on an assists from Tyler Duncan.
Andry assisted Duncan in the second half.
In boys under-7 play:
* Green Fireballs vs. Fireballs
Early in the game, Benjamin Most had a goal through a pack of
defenders on an assist from David Dewey. Garrett Kurtz and Dewey had
successive blocks that stopped their opponent’s drives and attempts
to score.
Mark Kelly, Ricky Schmidt and Most all had key blocks that saved
goals. Late in the game, Maxwell Morin drilled a strong kick from
midfield into the goal.
Ryan Kassel had numerous shots, while Bobby Briggs had a rocket
kick that bounced off the top of the goal. Noah Giddings, Jimmy
Schmidt, Morin, Kassel and Briggs all had key blocks.
In girls under-10 play:
* SunKissed 5, Titans 3
Olivia Dajee scored the Titans’ first goal and also played in
goal, while Madison Crane scored a goal later in the game, played
Sept. 22. Courtney Brown and Taylor Rule had several shots on goal
that came up just short.
Megan Diaz, Miranda Reenan and Cassidy Brazeel led the defense,
while Emily Krebs tallied four goals for the SunKissed. Sara
Machoskie was in on an assist to Krebs and Katharine Noe scored the
final goal for the SunKissed.
Kate Allen, Natasha Fisker and Jaime Kingkade tended the goal,
while Marit Vangrow played sweeper. Olivia Peterson and Alexa Losey
took shots on the goal.
In girls under-6 play:
* Pink Power Flamingos vs. Pink Ponies
Kaylin Knitowski played on offense and defense for the Flamingos,
while Jennifer Wetton, Olivia Egly and Savannah Stewart all scored
for the Flamingos in a game played Nov. 6.
Kelly Lang, Jessica Viale and Gabby Finear all had multiple goals
in the effort.
