Newport Breakers stifle Irvine Lasers’ attackers

The AYSO Newport Breakers girls under-14 team defeated the Irvine
Lasers, 3-0, behind a defense of Shelby Porter, Cayla Porter, Alex
Griggs, Christina Cooley and Bailey Johnson Saturday.
The defense controlled the game until the Breakers’ midfield of
Shannon Rohan and Alice Cope were able to feed Lauren DeVoy, who
delivered a pass to Malia Hohl for the goal. In the second half,
midfielders Katy Storch and Bailey Johnson pressed the ball forward
until Lauren DeVoy scored two goals on assists from Sara Gomez.
The goalkeeping duo of Stephanie Castor and Stephanie Nealy helped
solidify the shutout.
In boys under-16 play:
* Newport Disco Dancers 6, Huntington Beach 4
The Newport Disco Dancers fell behind early and trailed at
halftime, 3-1, but scored five straight goals to take command in a
make-up game played Nov. 4.
The Dancers received a hat trick from Brian Siemonsma, two goals
from Santiago Salcido and one goal from Morgan Webster. Also playing
well for the Disco Dancers were midfielders Sergio Rodriguez, who hit
the crossbar at least twice, Justin Whisler and Chris Lewis.
Contributing to the second-half blanking of Huntington Beach were
sweeper P.J. Baca, defenders Timothy Regan, Jose Mendez and Alex
Flores. Tommy Olson made continuous saves to keep Huntington Beach
off the board in the second half until the last minute of the game.
* Newport Disco Dancers 3, South Irvine 2
The Newport Disco Dancers won their third game in a row when Brian
Siemonsma, Sergio Rodriguez and Gary Guerrero scored one goal each
and Tommy Olson made several key saves.
Keeping the South Irvine attack off balance were sweeper P.J.
Baca, and defenders Jose Mendez, Chris Lewis, Alex Flores and Dillon
Giedt. Strong midfield play came from Timothy Regan, Morgan Webster,
Seth Janica and Justin Whisler.
Santiago Salcido had several shots on goal that just missed. After
a slow start the season finished on a three-game winning streak.
In boys under-14 play:
* Newport Mesa Infinity 1, North Irvine 1
The Newport Mesa Infinity lost an opportunity to move into second
place when they tied North Irvine, 1-1, Saturday.
Trailing, 1-0, with only five minutes remaining, the Infinity
showed its character by battling back for the draw. Juan Gonzalez
fired a shot.
Once again, the defense was anchored by Rodri Ruvalcaba and Austin
Wobrock. On one occasion, Zac Chocek came flying in to save a sure
goal off the goal line. Jesse Perez played in the goal despite a deep
gash on his shin suffered from a heavy collision with the goal post.
Erickson Klein, Shane Rocco and Austin Webster played a solid game.
The tie leaves Newport Mesa Infinity (7-2-2) in third place.
In boys under-12 play:
* Blue Star
Raddon Gross, Mathew Marlow and Marco Piazza anchored the defense
for the Blue Star team in a 1-1 tie. Sean Duggan, Kevin Harrington
and Hollin Alhart also put in solid performances. Ethan Murray and
Kelly Blake connected on a scoring combination to tie the score late
in the fourth quarter.
In girls under-11 play:
* Newport 3, Mission Viejo 1
Newport got on the board first when Savanna Gastineau drilled a
hard shot from the 18-yard line. With the score tied going into the
fourth quarter, Newport kept the attack up and Meaghan Kay powered
one in to break the tie. Josie Jogwe scored the final goal.
A defensive effort led by Monique Conant, Allison Schelin and
Madison Grant made a huge difference in this thrilling victory over
the Mission Viejo team.
In girls under-10 play:
* Pink Pussycats 2, Green Gos 2
The Pink Pussycats played a strong offensive game with several
shots on goal. Gianna Light scored first for the Pussycats, followed
by shots on goal by Emily Nall, Casey Duckworth and a game-tying
score by Courtney Buck.
Meghan Vance played an aggressive game as sweeper with solid
corner kicks. Andria Spears made several goal saves for the
Pussycats, while Sarah Whitney and Jessica Arnold provided the
defense against the Green Gos.
* Heartbreakers 1, Purple Pythons 2
Erin Hinkelman scored in the first half and had other near misses
on goal, while Sarah Zomaya, Katie Gaitan and Gabe Parisi also took
shots on goal.
Makayla Swies, Ricci Barton and Taylor Kalatschan did a tremendous
job as midfielders, and Alex Palmer, Christina Ferraro, together with
Andrea Ocampo at sweeper, led the defense.
Megan Bathen played in goal and saved more than a dozen shots.
* Rip Curl 1, Surfer Girls 1
The Rip Curls’ Madison Jabara scored off of an assist by Sammy
Singer in the first quarter to give the Rip Curls the lead Saturday.
Defensively, Page Keys, Nikki Walsh, Hayley Newett, Emma Howard
and Savannah Baron held the Surfers at bay the entire game. Allison
Kahn had five saves in goal, while Catherine Connelly, Emma Howard
and Monika Peterson led the offense.
Brinley Siemonsma took the ball from midfield through three
defenders and shot the ball in the corner of the goal to score the
only goal for the Surf Chicks.
* Purple Piranhas
Tristen and Torey Thompson, Sara Hamilton, August Sullivan, Reagan
Rutter, Hanah Roman, Taylor and Morgan Long, Olivia Ilkcagia, Carly
Christian, Rachel Gray and Katelynne Gangle led the Purple Piranhas
to a 9-0 season.
In boys under-10 play:
* Blue Lightning 2, Patriots 1
Blake Norton scored both goals for the Blue Lightning with passing
help from Andrew Xagorarakis-Spangler, Ryan Schroth and Nick
Shallahamer. Midfielders Buddy Mitchell, Joshua Eakin and Jake Norton
shocked the Patriots and gave support to the forwards.
The defense was led by Dayton Cribbs, Joshua Ford, Thomas Terry
and Daniel O’Toole, who made electrifying plays to stop the scoring
drives of the Patriots. Jake Norton also made some key saves as
goalie.
* Avalanche 6, Red Bulls 1
The Avalanche closed out the regular season with a 6-1 victory
over the Red Bulls.
Nic Sargeant opened the scoring with two first half goals. The
first goal was set up on a crossing pass from Gordon Lewis and the
second came off an indirect assist by Sam Jones.
Scott Grew, Riley Ricker and Rory Fleming kept offensive pressure
on the Red Bulls with balanced mid-field play. Sargeant added two
goals in the second half, working the field with Gage Coffelt and
Chris Buchanan.
Kevin Rakestraw scored on a long shot following a centering pass
from Parker Martinez. Coffelt capped the scoring with a tap-in on an
assist from Joey Gregory.
* Devil Rays vs. Trojans
In their first shutout of the season, Devil Rays’ goalies Isiah
Suarez, Rocky Gonzales, Izaak Lofgren and Zack Cornwell each played
for a quarter. Lee Stevens, T.J. Tarazevits and Brandt Boucher worked
together as defenders.
In the first quarter, R.J. Roberts assisted Bob Boullon in scoring
the first of his three unanswered goals in the first half. In the
second half, the Trojans’ goalie deflected a number of shots by Marc
Gehlke, who took passes from Jake Wadman. Late in the final quarter,
Max Johnson found a way to penetrate the Trojan defense and scored
twice.
In girls under-8 play
* Disco Girls vs. Watermelons
Mackenzie Gaddis scored both goals for the Disco Girls against the
Watermelons with assists from Sammie Yeager and Jessica Ochoa. Sammie
Ludes and Kelsey Prater put pressure on the Watermelon defense.
Camile Christensen played in goal, while a tough Disco Girls’
defense of Emma Erickson, Isabella Islava, Sammie Yeager and Jessica
Ochoa stopped multiple scoring chances for the Watermelons.
* Purple Panthers vs. Green Geckos
Led by Libby Knight, Tara Fuller and Carlee Kapana, the Panthers
controlled the action for much of the game. Knight and Kapana
combined in passing, resulting in several shots on goal. The first
goal was scored midway through the final quarter when Knight stole a
goal kick and drilled a right-footer from about 60 feet.
Scoring on two of their four shots, the Geckos were comfortable to
sit back and wait for the Panthers to bring the game to them. The
Panthers have found a first-rate sweeper in Leah Castillo. Her play
the last several weeks has kept other teams on their heels.
Kira Wandrocke, Bryn Crowell, Rachel Whitelegge and McKenzie
Stephens played solid defense. Kappy Fuller played in her second game
at goal.
* Pink Panthers vs. Honey Bees
The Pink Panthers quickly pounced on the yellow Honey Bees with a
goal from Olivia Sever, assisted by a combined offensive attack from
Anna Hancock, Logan Grove and Gabby Mangano.
Versatile defensive plays by Caroline Gels protected the Pink
Panther goal from the midfield. Amanda Dupont, Hailey Mahaffey, Gabby
Mangano and Sabrina Sanchez played on defense.
A determined Erin Barth scored on a breakaway in the fourth and
then again with an assist from Logan Grove to secure the Pink
Panthers’ advantage.
* Hurricanes
Amanda Sheppard, Rowan Frederiksen and Abbey Pickett didn’t let
anything get past them in goal. The defense gave them protection, led
by Annie La Grandeur, Lauren Walker and Jessica Stone. Katie Conway
made a pass to Natalie Walker to set up a goal and Kate Pipkin kept
it rolling along with another score.
* Blue Dolphins vs. Pink Panthers
Sofie Bercaw led the Blue Dolphins offense with the game’s first
goal, along with assists from Erin Wilson, Gabby Shelley and Sophie
Smith. Jordan Goldsberry made several saves in goal, while Julia
Thorley and Taylor Matthews played on both ends of the field.
In boys under-8 play:
* Crushers
Mike Geiger scored two goals for the Crushers off of assists from
Ben Bockrath and Peter Seidner. The Crushers’ defense was tough again
with big saves from Keith Marshall and Michael Ischinger.
While playing forward, Andre Espinoza, Ivan Ramos, Devon Wear and
Finn Dobkin controlled the ball. After scoring three goals last week,
James Porter played solid defense and kept the ball away from the
goal.
In girls under-7 play:
* Green Gators vs. Lizards
The Green Gators scored in every quarter against the Lizards
Saturday. Oliva Jones scored twice and single goals were scored by
Emily Goltz, Katie Kearns, and Jacque DeFeo. The goal was made by
Megan Keys. The defensive line of Emma Vujnovich, Megan Keys, Paige
Tamblyn and Katie Kearns were on fire all day, holding back the
Lizard offense.
In boys under-7 play:
* Stingers vs. Green Bombers
Cade Clement scored the Stingers only goal off of assists from
Liam Tough, Alex Escalera and Ben Hammond. Vinnie Bartolone made
several key shots on goal and made several key saves as goalie.
Robert Stephens, Ethan Clayton and Collin Pipkin each showed strong
defensive skills and defended against several charges on goal by the
opposing team.
* Salty Sea Dawgs
In this defensive struggle, Dawg Defense, led by Peter Harano,
Jack Rapillo, Sean Korkmaz and Jake Weyrich played tough, yielding
only two shots on goal. Goalies Jordan Teisan, J.D. Dennis , Kingston
McCarthy and Andrew Laidlaw blocked several shots. Jeremiah Sheldon
scored a second-half goal off the post and continued to thwart
opposing offensive breaks.
In girls under-6 play:
* Blue Sharks vs. Pink Hearts
The Sharks played an offensive game with goals by Taylor Craig,
Melelani Falasco, Lauren Vissman, Danielle Wilson and Lily Woodall.
* Flamingos vs. Orange Sunflowers
Flamingos’ Julie Ackerman came out strong, scoring two goals
within minutes. Madeline Phillips assisted on one of the two goals.
McKenzie Porteous also put an early goal in the net.
Erika Ellis played on defense, stealing the ball from the
Sunflowers just before they had an opportunity to score. Sunflowers’
Chloe Schilling got by the Flamingo offense for two scores.
Paige Fults and Mandy Tapfer responded with goals for the
Flamingos before Julia Ackerman scored the final goal. Kate
McAllister played at both ends, mixing it up and getting many touches
on the ball.
* Blue Dolphins vs. Shining Stars
Amanda Wilson, Abby Flores, Kailey Hambek and Marissa Cislaw all
scored goals in a balanced offense for the Blue Dolphins. Paige Okey,
Emily Fletcher and Kendall Machado also contributed key kicks and
solid defense.
* Pink Dolphins vs. Pink Fireballs
Kate Granoff could not be denied the goal during the Pink Dolphins
play Nov. 6 against the Pink Fireballs. The action intensified with
Natalie Capellini’s long, strong passes and Marley Mais’ defense.
Ultimately, the Pink Dolphins ruled the field with goals from Callie
Govaars, Claire Johnson, Callie Kennedy and Charlie Toffel.
In boys under-6 play:
* Cheetahs vs. Green Geckos
Joshua Jenkins and Jack McClintock led the Cheetah defense with
stops on the back lines, assisted at midfield by the strategic play
of brothers Lucas and James Hodges.
Chandler Siemonsma and Ashe Deering each scored for the Cheetahs,
while McClintock had a couple of shots on goal that barely missed the
net. The rest of the Cheetah offense, including Jon Hodges and Cole
Kinder, started off the scoring with a shot from the outside for the
Green Geckos. Christopher Bailey followed next with a score off of an
assist from Tyler Browning. Cole Shattinger, Bentley Wilson and
Nikola Knaeps played defense throughout the game. The final score of
the game was made by Drew Dobbs off of an assist from Cole Kinder.
* Purple Dragons
Ben Toffel made the first goal off a center pass from Dominic
Loftus. Dominic also had a great header to block a shot. Nic
Rimlinger received a pass from Chase Adelsohn at midfield and took it
all the way for a goal.
Barron Banta sacrificed himself in a slide to protect the
opponents from scoring. Malcolm Davis and Max Toffel hustled each had
numerous attempts on goal.
* Riding Giants
Riding Giants found the net often with Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt
scoring six goals. Andrew Stoneman and Chandler Hunt had numerous
assists. Turnbow-Lindenstadt stole numerous passes and navigated up
the field around multiple Blue Surfers.
Jake Smith had his first goal of the season. Garth Blumenthal
improved his game by aggressively chasing the ball.
In girls under-5 play:
* Purple Ponies vs. Shamrocks
Maddie Vargas started the game with a burst of energy and scored
three goals in the first quarter. Delaney Gendron intercepted the
ball from the Shamrocks and had solid passing. Emma Botros had three
goals for the Ponies.
The Purple Ponies’ defense was helped by Karter Farris.
In boys under-5 play:
* Green Bulldogs vs. Red Hot Chili Peppers
Ben Zehnder played his best game of the season, scoring four goals
for the Green Bulldogs against the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Billy
Shannon added two goals using his left foot, while Eann McKasson and
Joe Skinner assisted on the goals.
* The Stingers vs. Stingrays
Max Sandberg, Keagan Coyne, Cole McFetters, Scott Ryder and
Forrest Faigen all scored goals for the speedy Stingers.
All of the Stingrays managed to get one in the net. The Stingrays’
Jake Bashore, Jake Edler, Jagger Mitchell, Cameron Weiss and Joshua
Gehlke also played solid defense, keeping many shots from going in.
Jagger Mitchell scored from the middle of the field, while Joshua
Gehlke fought for the ball then dribbled the whole field to score.
