High schools receive anti-drug donation

The Huntington Beach Union High School District received a $2,600

donation Tuesday from anti-drug groups to aid students’.

Shirley Carey, a representative from Promoting Resources in Drug

Education, or PRIDE, and a facilitator of the Substance Abuse and

Violence Education, or SAVE, Task Force, presented the donation.

The funds will go to help students and families work on the “40

Developmental Assets,” traits found by the Search Institute to help

young people grow up to be responsible and healthy.

“The more of these assets you have in your life as an adult or a

child, actually, the more likely you are to do the right thing,”

Carey said.

Carey said these assets include strong family support and having

good adult role models.

“The money is for training and resources to train the adult who

will interact with kids in school,” Carey said.

All adults in the schools, not just teachers, will be trained,

Carey said. They will include everybody the students come in contact

with, bus drivers and janitors among them.

In addition to the donation to the Huntington Beach Union High

School District, the Ocean View School District will receive $5,100,

Huntington Beach City School District $4,400, Huntington Christian

$200 and the Westminster School District $1,300 for the schools they

have in Huntington Beach.

The amount of money was calculated based on the amount of

students, Carey said.

SAVE is a local Huntington Beach organization composed of public

and private elementary schools, high schools, parents, teachers and

students. Carey said it is a collaborative group that came together

when the Drug Abuse Resistance Education, or DARE, program was

threatened.

The money came from the PRIDE foundation, said Carey, which is

working with SAVE to manage the funds. Carey said the PRIDE

foundation made a total of $13,600 available, and the schools will

match the amount.

Carey said PRIDE worked in collaboration with police officers to

support DARE and now they have shifted their support to the SAVE Task

Force.
