Season’s end

Mike Sciacca

The final week of the prep football regular season is upon us and for

three local teams, this week’s matchup will be the end of the line in

2004.

One school -- Edison -- is in a fight Friday for an automatic

playoff berth into next week’s CIF-Southern Section playoffs.

Here’s a look at the regular season finales:

TONIGHT

Huntington (4-4-1, 0-4) vs. Los Alamitos (8-1, 4-0)

(at Veterans Stadium, 7 p.m.)

Huntington entered Sunset League play with a four-game win streak;

tonight; they’ll try to exit league play by ending a four-game Sunset

slide.

But it won’t be easy -- the Oilers face a Los Al team that already

has clinched a share of the league title, its fourth Sunset title in

a row.

The Griffins have steamrolled six straight opponents since losing

to Mission Viejo on Sept. 9 and are 8-1 overall.

Last year’s score: Los Al 42, Huntington 14

FRIDAY

Esperanza (6-3, 2-2) vs. Edison (6-3, 2-2)

(at Huntington Beach High, 7 p.m.)

Plain and simple, this game is the battle for third-place and the

final guaranteed playoff bid from the Sunset League.

Both teams have identical records and each are coming off

emotional losses to longtime rivals. Esperanza was jolted by Los Al,

35-12, and Edison was stung by Fountain Valley, 21-20.

Still, the loser of this game figures to be a strong contender for

an at-large bid to next week’s playoffs.

Last year’s score: Edison 31, Esperanza 7

Fountain Valley (4-5, 3-1) vs. Marina (1-8, 1-3)

(at Westminster High, 7 p.m.)

Marina comes into this game on a high, as it won its first game of

the season last week by defeating Huntington Beach, 24-14. With

nothing to lose and everything to gain, the Vikings, playing what is

their final game of the season, could catch a Fountain Valley squad

on an emotional letdown following last week’s one-point win over

archrival Edison.

Last year’s score: Fountain Valley 28, Marina 16

(Fountain Valley leads, 21-8-1)

Ocean View (1-8, 0-5) vs. Santa Ana (4-5, 2-3)

(at Santa Ana Stadium, 7 p.m.)

Like Marina, Ocean View is suiting up for its final game of 2004,

and the Seahawks would love nothing better than to end a losing skid

at six games. A hungry Ocean View team, which has struggled to score

during that streak, could give Santa Ana a battle, as the Saints’

defense has allowed an average of 21 points per game.

In the 2003 meeting between the teams, Ocean View collected its

lone Golden West League victory at the expense of the Saints.

Last year’s score: Ocean View 34, Santa Ana 33
