Regatta raises big money for CHOC
Boaters and their sponsors helped raise more than $50,000 for the
Children’s Hospital of Orange County during a two-day event held at
the Balboa Yacht Club.
The weekend’s take was well in excess of the roughly $3,800 that
sailors raised at last year’s regatta. Most of the donations could be
traced to one sailor, event co-chairwoman Megan Delaney said.
Newport Beach resident Jim Devling, skipper of Campaign II, helped
raise about $40,000 for the hospital, Delaney said. Devling, whose
ship also took first place in its event, was sponsored by business
associates connected to his company, CEG Construction in Pico Rivera.
The money was slated to be collected by the Cinderella Guild, a
group that raises funds for the hospital.
The money will likely be spent on high-end medical equipment.
“If you need a really special masterpiece of equipment that costs
$1 million, that’s where it goes,” Delaney said.
