On Nov. 20, the focus of the fourth annual Hearts and Hands Community
Service Day will be on Families Together, according to Jaimie Day,
event organizer and vice president of the Newport Mesa Irvine
Interfaith Council.
Hearts and Hands will be held at Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints church at 801 Dover in Newport Beach from 9 a.m.
and 3 p.m.
Families, youth and adults from Methodist, Lutheran, Latter-day
Saints, Jewish, Islamic, Baha’i, Episcopal, Roman Catholic, Sikh and
other congregations, as well as service club members and high school
students, will spend time together in service to others. The
beneficiaries will be Warm Up America, the Orange County Council of
Boy Scouts of America, Families Forward, Share Our Selves, Friends In
Service to Humanity, Threads of Love’s Orange County chapter, the
Someone Cares Soup Kitchen, South Coast Children Home, Vineyard
Storehouse, Adopt-A-Social Worker, the Wilson Street Learning Center
and our troops in Iraq.
There will be hands-on projects for men, women and children, along
with a bake sale to raise funds to purchase diapers for the needy.
Boy Scouts will be collecting canned food for the Second Harvest Food
Bank. Lunch will be served at a cost of $4 per person.
Daily Pilot readers and their families are invited to share their
time in service to others on Nov. 20. If you have an hour or two to
share on that day, contact Day at (949) 642-9460 or by e-mail at
[email protected]. More on supporting our troops in Iraq in next
week’s column.
CONFLICT RESOLUTION
The public is invited to attend the 11th annual Religious
Diversity Forum tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Student Center
at UC Irvine.
This year’s theme is “Conflict Resolution: The Role of Religion
and Spirituality.” Sponsored by the Office of Equal Opportunity and
Diversity at UC Irvine, the Alliance for Spiritual Community and the
National Conference for Community and Justice, the day will feature
workshops on religious observances and conflict resolution and
listening, as well as a panel discussion on Middle East peace. The
cost is $20 per person, $10 for students. For more information, visit
www.rdforum.org or call (949) 661-3087.
KEEP YOUR COMPUTER HUMMING
UC Irvine professor Randy Langel will present tips for keeping
your computer in top condition at the Computer Friends meeting this
Wednesday at the Oasis Senior Center in Corona del Mar.
He will explain things to do once, weekly and monthly to keep your
computer humming. Besides teaching at UC Irvine, Langel is the leader
of the Advanced Internet Special Interest Group at Computer Friends
meetings.
In the business world, he has served for 29 years as the practice
leader for IBM’s Web Delivered Services & Tools consulting group.
This business unit was created based on research he conducted into
how the Internet could be used for purposes other than marketing,
advertising or e-commerce. Don’t miss this exciting, informative
program.
Langel will begin his presentation at 1:15 p.m. All are welcome,
from beginners to experts. There is a $3 charge for visitors who are
not members of Computer Friends. For more information, visit the
website at https://vivianboulos.tripod.com.
