Corona del Mar clinches league

The Corona del Mar High girls tennis team defeated host Tesoro, 10-8,

Monday and Calvary Chapel, 18-0, Tuesday to clinch the school’s

eighth consecutive Pacific Coast League girls tennis title.

The No. 2 doubles team Rachael Miller and Miranda Young, along

with No. 3 doubles team Hayley Young and Jami Steele, both swept

their sets against Tesoro to lead CdM, which improved to 14-2, 8-0 in

league.

Draganza medals again

* GOLF: Newport Harbor High golfer Natalie Draganza medaled her

sixth time in Sea View League play this season Tuesday, shooting a 40

and leading the Newport girls golf team to a 234-263 victory over

Laguna Hills at Laguna Woods Golf Course.

Out of nine league matches this season, Draganza has won six,

while teammate Kayleigh Horn has medaled in the other three.

Horn shot a 44 on Tuesday and Ashley Jacobs (47), Kendall Horn

(49) and Katie McKay (54) were the other top finishers for the

Sailors.

Sage sets up title match

* TENNIS: The Sage Hill School girls tennis team defeated Oxford,

16-2, Tuesday in an Academy League match at Sage.

Sage (10-5, 8-1 in league) plays at Fairmont on Thursday in a

match that will determine if the Lightning will share the Academy

League title, or be second in the league. Last time they played, on

Oct. 5, the Lightning lost 11-7.

Tars wrestle Wolverines

* TENNIS: The Newport Harbor High girls tennis team defeated host

Aliso Niguel, 11-7, Tuesday in a Sea View League girls tennis match.

No. 1 doubles teammates Brittanny Sturgess and Sasha Dunlap, along

with No. 3 doubles players Carly Adams and Megan McKay, swept their

sets to lead the Sailors (9-5, 5-2 in league) to the win.

Castaneda places first

* CROSS COUNTRY: Estancia High junior Ernie Castaneda placed first

overall in a three-way meet involving Estancia, Westminster and

Saddleback Tuesday at Fairview Park.

Castaneda ran the three-mile course in 16 minutes, 21 seconds. The

team scores for the boys were: Saddleback 24, Estancia 31; Estancia

15, Westminster 48; Saddleback 15, Estancia 45.

Estancia’s Sidney Barloon placed second overall for the girls,

running a 19:56. Team scores for the girls were: Saddleback 19,

Estancia 40; Estancia 19, Westminster 39; Saddleback 15, Westminster

50.

Castaneda, Alex Cahuantzi (third in 16:43), Alan Reza (eighth in

17:14), Hector Gomez (ninth in 17:30) and Jose Garcia (10th in 17:38)

were the boys top finishers.

Barloon, Paula Negrete (eighth in 21:20), Okairy Lomeli (ninth in

21:25), Lucy Leon (13th in 21:46) and Eunice Rodriguez (14th in

21:51) were the top girls runners.

Newport battles to tie

* FIELD HOCKEY: Senior goalkeeper Ciara Lawrence made 10 saves

while the rest of the Newport Harbor High field hockey team’s defense

held strong in a scoreless tie to close the regular season against

host Edison Tuesday. The Sailors are 16-3-5, 7-0-3 in the Sunset

League.

Lightning come alive

* WATER POLO: Sage Hill School’s boys water polo team broke away

with nine second-half goals to soundly defeat host Whitney, 12-6, in

a nonleague contest at Cerritos Park East on Tuesday.

Jordan Cline and John Neff each scored five goals while Julian

Tooma and Chris Mazzo each tallied one to power the Lightning (12-8).

Goalkeeper Trevor Granger made 11 saves for Sage.

Mesa drowns Orange

* WATER POLO: The Costa Mesa High boys water polo team dominated

Orange, 30-3, Tuesday in a Golden West League game at Orange.

Junior Kyle Thorsness had a game-high 12 goals in the rout, while

senior Luke Yellin added five more for the Mustangs (14-4, 5-0 in

league).

In Monday’s action in the North Orange County tournament at

Northwood, Mesa defeated Garden Grove, 15-1, in the opener, before

falling to Santa Margarita, 14-5. Mesa will resume play in the

tournament Friday, also at Northwood.

Senior Adam Douglas and junior Kyle Thorsness scored four goals

apiece against Grove, while Thorsness had three against Santa

Margarita.

Lions aided by Wynn

VOLLEYBALL: Vanguard University’s Kim Wynn recorded 23 kills as

the host Lions rallied to defeat The Master’s College, 30-28, 20-30,

24-30, 30-26, 15-9, in Golden State Athletic Conference action.
