Recent Newport Harbor High School graduate Peter J. Hoyt was awarded

a $1,000 Presidential Freedom Scholarship from the Corporation for

National and Community Service and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America

for his outstanding commitment to public service. Hoyt, 18, coached

intramural basketball teams for the Boys & Girls Club of the Harbor

Area ... William M. Luxford, a clinical assistant professor of

otolaryngology at UC Irvine, received an American Academy of

Otolaryngology -- Head and Neck Surgery Distinguished Service Award

at the organization’s annual meeting, Sept. 19 to 22 in New York.

Luxford, who also instructs at USC and at the House Ear Institute,

received the award for his dedication to the academy and the

specialty. The award recognizes medical professionals for their

instructional courses, scientific papers, educational committee

involvement or academic leadership.
