Pirates double up at Riverside

Jose Casillas, Humberto Rojas and Kellen Acosta went 1-2-3,

respectively, for the Orange Coast College men’s cross country team,

which cruised to victory in the Riverside invitational/Southern

California Preview meet on the four-mile Moreno Valley course Friday.

Casillas claimed top individual honors in 20:53 followed by Rojas

(21:12) and Acosta (21:33) for Coast, which tallied 20 points, 45

more than second-place Mt. San Antonio. Coast’s Jason Valencia

finished fifth in 21:44 while teammate Matt Staggs placed ninth in

22:06.

Ludi Valdez took top honors in the women’s race in 19:19, helping

Coast emerge victorious on the 5K course.

Teammate Norma Hernandez took third overall in 20:30 while Emilie

Vo placed fourth in 20:35. Coast scored 22 points, soundly outpacing

second-place Riverside (71).

Gabriela Santana took ninth in 20:52 followed by teammate Jewel

Butler (11th in 21:33) to round out the scoring five.

CdM hot in Chicago

* VOLLEYBALL: Senior outside hitter Jordan Smith had 17 digs and

13 kills as the Corona del Mar High girls volleyball team won its

second match Friday in the Mother McAuley national tournament in

Chicago, beating Sanburg of Chicago, 25-21, 26-24, after sweeping

Queen of Peace (Chicago) in the opening round, 25-22, 25-20, behind

Lindsey Ensign’s nine kills.

Coach Bill Christiansen’s Sea Kings (10-3) will likely face

Wisconsin in the gold bracket at 10 a.m. today in what figures to be

the first of four matches.

In CdM’s opening win, Smith added 26 digs while setter teammates

Traci Lawson and Kelly Christian contributed 11 and 10 assists,

respectively. Breanna Ogden had 11 digs.

In the second match, Lawson (14 assists) and Christian (13) shared

setter duties while CdM’s Britta Nielsen had two service aces.

Langer leads Lightning

* TENNIS: Stephanie Langer swept at No. 1 singles while Sage Hill

School claimed six doubles sets to pace a 12-6 Academy League girls

tennis victory over host Oxford Friday.

All three Sage doubles teams, which included Sarah Flynn and Alle

Hsu, along with the duos of Salen Andrews and Carissa Cummings and

Brina Dokich and Rachel Heyler, won two of three sets.

Sarah Geocaris won twice in singles for Sage (5-3, 3-0 in league),

which has won 17 straight league matches dating to the final two

contests of 2002.

The Lightning, ranked second in CIF Southern Section Division V,

host Fairmont Prep (8-0, 3-0) in a battle for early league supremacy,

at 3:15 p.m. at Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club Tuesday.

Zapiain leads Pirates

* VOLLEYBALL: Sophomore middle blocker Melissa Zapiain fired a

season-high 21 kills to go along with 14 digs and five blocks to lead

Orange Coast College to a 30-20, 30-25, 22-30, 30-21 win over

visiting Fullerton Friday in the Orange Empire Conference women’s

volleyball opener for both teams.

Caitlin Parker led the Coast offense with 48 assists, while

sophomore outside hitter Donka Drozd finished the game with 18 kills

and one block.

Orange Coast (5-1) visits Saddleback in conference play at 7 p.m.

Wednesday.

Sage Hill enjoys blowout

* WATER POLO: The visiting Sage Hill School boys water polo team

scored 10 first-quarter goals and finished with a 20-1 nonleague

victory over Long Beach Jordan Friday.

Julian Tooma led the Lightning with five goals while Jordan Cline

scored three times. John Neff and Chris Mazzo each tallied three for

the victors while Sage goalkeeper Trevor Granger made 11 saves.

Anteaters shut out Davis

* SOCCER: The UC Irvine men’s soccer team shut out UC Davis Aggies

Friday night at Anteater Stadium.

Sophomore Brad Evans put UCI on the board first with a goal 9:01

into the game off assists from junior Sean Iliff and senior Sebastian

Galmarini. Galmarini headed the ball past Aggie keeper Charles Warne

at 28:20 off a pair of assists from junior Daniel Marshall (Corona

del Mar) and Doug Franco. Evans scored his second goal of the game

and his sixth of the season at the 60:29 mark on a free kick from 25

yards out.

Senior goalkeeper Cameron Rossi had eight saves to pick up his

first shutout of the season and the 13th of his career. Charles Warne

had four saves for the Aggies (3-5-1) and Jake Martini had one save.

The Anteaters (4-5) open Big West Conference play at 7 p.m.

Wednesday when they host UC Riverside.

UC Irvine in top 20

* CROSS COUNTRY: The UC Irvine women’s cross country team finished

16th and the Anteater men’s squad placed 20th in the Notre Dame

invitational at Burke Memorial Golf Course in South Bend, Ind.,

Friday.

UCI scored 431 points in the 24-school meet that featured eight of

the nation’s top-25 ranked teams. Senior Kim Ramirez finished 45th in

17:44, freshman Marie Nguyen was 92nd in 18:18 and freshman Candice

Proctor was 95th in 18:19. Sophomore Kim Handel placed 117th (18:34),

junior Kelli Vanderburg was 119th (18:35), and freshmen Amber Gordon

(18:48) and Erinn Kim (19:08) finished 141st and 169th, respectively.

Anteater junior Ricky Barnes finished 63rd in 24:47, junior Tom

Whelan was 86th in 25:06 and sophomore Tim Hearst placed 131st in

25:40. Junior John Kluve was 146th (25:58), senior Andrew Garratt was

147th (25:58), senior David Santos finished 169th (26:23) and

sophomore Ryan Ketcham placed 189th (27:36).

UCI returns to action in the UC San Diego invitational Oct. 9.

Cypress stops OCC streak

* SOCCER: Brandon Melendez scored two goals and the visiting

Cypress College men’s soccer team snapped host Orange Coast’s

four-game winning streak with a 2-1 Orange Empire Conference victory

Friday.

Coast’s Eli Solis cut the Cypress lead to 2-1 with a goal in the

82nd minute, but the Pirates (4-3-1, 2-1 in the OEC) got no closer.

Trent Painter made four saves in goal for Coast.

Cypress improved to 3-3-2, 1-1-1 in the OEC.

Day ignites Mustangs

* SOCCER: Former Costa Mesa High standout Sharon Day scored her

seventh goal of the season in the second minute of play Friday for

host Cal Poly San Luis Obispo as the Mustangs defeated UC Irvine,

3-1, in a Big West Conference women’s soccer opener.

Kim Conlon scored 86:36 into the game for UC Irvine (3-6-2), which

dropped its fourth in five matches.

Cal Poly improved to 5-1-3.

Lions’ Hess honored

* SOCCER: Senior forward also takes Lion of the Week honors

Vanguard University senior men’s soccer star Matt Hess has been

named Golden State Athletic Conference Player of the Week and Lion of

the Week after leading the Lions to two nonconference wins.

The three-time NAIA All-American scored two goals in an 8-2 win

over Chapman Sept. 22.

He then scored four goals in a 10-1 thumping of Alliant

International Saturday (Sept. 25). It was the 11th time in his career

he has scored at least three goals in one game.

After the Aliant win, Hess had 11 goals this season and 76 for his

VU career. He scored two more in Tuesday’s 7-0 win over Christian

Heritage.
