Things are about to get Ducky

B.W. COOK

The 11th annual Mighty Rubber Ducky Derby is scheduled for tomorrow

at Wild Rivers Waterpark, Irvine. More than 10,000 rubber ducks and

their human parents are expected to show up Sunday for the 1/4 -mile

water race to a finish line of fabulous prizes. It’s all for the

Children’s Bureau of Orange County, with proceeds from the event

going to serve the needs of disadvantaged kids in the community.

A Very Important Duck reception will accompany the big race. Local

restaurants have donated wonderful “Sunday In The Park” food. Live

entertainment will add to the festivity, and children of all ages

will be able to enjoy the water rides.

“This is a fun family day that helps to promote the vast array of

services that the Children’s Bureau offers to families in need,” said

Newport Beach’s Peggy Goldwater Clay, who helped to create the derby

some 11 years ago. “I have such fond memories of starting the October

family event. Our first derby raised $40,000, and this year we hope

to top the $160,000 net mark.”

The “Race for the Cure” was an incredible success this year in

Fashion Island. The 13th annual run-walk attracted some 22,500

participants and on-lookers intent on making a difference for women

fighting breast cancer. Race chairs Kathy Pearson and Marcia Pendjer

were thrilled to report that they met their financial goal of $1.5

million. Local TV celeb Ed Arnold served as master of ceremonies,

with a special guest address by Harald Herrmann, the president of

Yard House Restaurants, who lost his wife Kathy to breast cancer last

year.

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was founded by Nancy

G. Brinker in 1982 in honor of the memory of her sister who lost her

battle with breast cancer at age 36. Today, there are some 100 Komen

Races nationwide, with the Newport event being the largest in

California. For more information, please call (714) 957-9165 or visit
