Hosseni tops local winners

Newport Beach resident Erica Hosseni won the women’s Pro-Am division

to highlight locals competing in the Op Newport Classic surf contest

that wrapped up Sunday at 56th Street.

Hosseni finished second in her first-round heat, then was third in

the repercharge, before topping the six-woman field in the final to

claim the $1,000 first prize.

Other Newport Beach surfers who won division titles included

Parker McNaughton (men’s masters division, ages 30-and-older), Nick

Johnson (college men, ages 19-and-older), and Josh Hoyer (the air

show).

Newport Beach residents Larry Christiansen (men’s masters) and

Adam Popp (college men) finished third in their respective divisions,

surfing in 2-3-foot, glassy, clean conditions Sunday.

Nick Kovach from San Diego won the men’s Pro-Am, pocketing the

$2,000 first prize, while Ryan Simmons of Seal Beach and Heath

Walker, an Australian living in San Diego, were second and third,

respectively.

Holly Beck from the Palos Verdes area was second in the women’s

Pro-Am, followed by Claire Bebilacqua from Australia.

Marty Weinstein topped the field in the boys high school division

(ages 15-18).

Chase Brady won the boys middle school division (ages 12-14),

while Darlane Connolly won the girls division (all ages).
