Anteaters surprise Pilots

The UC Irvine men’s soccer team upset No. 20-ranked Portland, 3-2,

Sunday to complete action in the Husky Fever Classic at the

University of Washington.

Senior Lorne Howlett opened the scoring in the 21st minute for the

Anteaters (3-5-0), converting assists from sophomore Doug Franco and

junior Sean Iliff .

Alejandro Salazar tied the game for the Pilots (5-2-0) in the 55th

minute with an assist from Heath Pearce.

Bobak Talebi gave Portland a 2-1 lead in the 68th minute on a shot

from 12 yards out.

UCI sophomore Brad Evans tied the game six minutes later by

directing a free kick through the hands of the Pilot goalkeeper Luis

Robles.

Evans scored again in the 83rd minute off an assist from Howlett

to finalize the scoring.

UCI goalkeeper Cameron Rossi had 10 saves, while Robles had three.

The Anteaters play host to UC Davis Friday at 7 p.m. at Anteater

Stadium.

The visiting USC women’s soccer team took a 2-0 first-half lead

and held on for a 2-1 nonconference win over UC Irvine Sunday.

Corona del Mar High product Lauren Shepherdson opened the scoring

for USC in the 39th minute. She scored inside the 18-yard box on a ball that deflected off a UCI defender.

Rosa Anna Tantillo doubled the lead less than two minutes later,

converting on a breakaway set up by Lauren Brown.

UCI junior Lauren Baer got her first goal of the season inside the

box in the 68th minute. Senior Tara Weldon and sophomore Lauryn

Birkinshaw were both credited with assists on the play.

Sophomore goalkeeper Marissa Welliver had four saves for UCI

(3-5-2) and Veronica Simonton had one save for USC (6-3-1).

The loss extended a four-game winless streak for UCI.
