The Sage Hill School girls tennis team increased its Academy League
winning streak to 15 matches by topping visiting Capistrano Valley
Christian, 15-3, Friday at the Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club.
Sage sophomore Sarah Geocaris won 18 of 19 singles games and all
three Lightning doubles teams swept to help Coach A.G. Longoria’s
squad improve to 3-3, 1-0 in league.
CVC fell to 2-2, 1-2.

Eagles defeat Warren
* WATER POLO: Estancia High’s boys water polo team used a
nine-goal outburst in the third quarter to pull away and down Warren,
21-15, in a round-robin game of the Irvine tournament at Irvine High
Friday.
Estancia (3-2) will play its first of two consolation-round games
at 11:40 a.m. today.
Chad Kunert and Danny Alderete each scored seven goals while Sean
Goodman added four for the Eagles (3-2), who switched to a pressing
defense to generate several counterattacks in the third quarter,
Estancia Coach John Carpenter said.
Scott Hulett added two goals while Devon Mellin scored once for
the Eagles. Brock McDonald made six saves while Goodman stopped three
shots.

Lightning sweep Koalas
* VOLLEYBALL: The Sage Hill School girls volleyball team rallied
from deficits in the first two games to earn a 25-22, 26-24, 25-23
nonleague win over visiting Connelly Friday.
Junior outside hitter Cat Dailey led the winners (3-1) with 12
kills, while 6-foot-1 junior middle blocker Haywood Wright added nine
kills and eight blocks.
Kelly Hutchinson chipped in five aces and one key stuff block as
the Lightning scored four straight to reverse a 24-22 second-game
deficit.
Connelly fell to 1-2.
Crosson, Terry double up
* SOCCER: Freshman forward Chrstine Crosson and freshman
midfielder Elizabeth Terry scored two goals each Friday as the Orange
Coast College women’s soccer team shut out visiting Irvine Valley,
4-0, in Orange Empire Conference action.
Kara DeMille and Michelle Vahdatipour shared time in goal for
Orange Coast, but neither was forced to make a save because the
Lasers (0-4-1 overall and in conference) did not attempt a shot.
The Pirates (6-1-1, 4-1 in the OEC) visit Santiago Canyon at 3
p.m. Tuesday.
Pirates tame Tigers
* SOCCER: Orange Coast College’s Eli Solis scored in the 31st
minute on a Victor Cervantes assist and Miguel Ochoa added a
penalty-kick goal in the 52nd minute Friday as the Pirates defeated
Riverside, 2-1, in an Orange Empire Conference men’s soccer opener at
Riverside.
The Pirates, who improved to 3-2-1 overall, were sparked by goalie
Trent Painter’s two saves in the win over the Tigers (3-1-1, 0-1),
whose lone goal came in the 89th minute.
Orange Coast will host Santiago Canyon at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
Anteaters tie LMU
* SOCCER: The UC Irvine women’s soccer team and visiting Loyola
Marymount played to a scoreless tie Friday night at Anteater Stadium.
UCI sophomore goalkeeper Marissa Welliver picked up her third
shutout of the season with three saves. She leads the Big West with
51 saves on the year and is now part of a four-way tie for the Big
West lead in shutouts.
Sophomore Lauryn Birkinshaw had five shots for UCI (3-4-2), as
goalie Joslyn Slovek made six saves for LMU (5-3-1).
The Anteaters will play host to USC Sunday at 1 p.m.
Sailors silence Santa Ana
* FIELD HOCKEY: Julia Bernay and Sasha Grumman each scored
second-half goals to help lead the host Newport Harbor High field
hockey team to a 3-0 victory over Santa Ana Thursday at Harper
Community Center.
Reese Simmons opened the scoring with a first-half goal for
Newport (6-1-2) while Lara Schilling and Rachel Foster each added
assists for the victors, who fired 21 shots.
Newport goalkeeper Ciara Lawrence made one save.
Semis today at Costa Mesa
* TENNIS: Robert Haybittel of Australia and Lesley Joseph of the
U.S. will square off in one semifinal at 11 a.m. today while Rameez
Junaid (Australia) and Denis Zivkovic (U.S.) will follow in the
another in the United States Tennis Association men’s Futures Tour
Diadora Pro Championships at Costa Mesa Tennis Center.
The singles final is Sunday at noon.
Ventura sweeps Coast
* VOLLEYBALL: Host Ventura College sent Orange Coast to its first
loss, 30-28, 30-24, 30-28, in a nonconference women’s volleyball
match Friday night.
Melissa Zapiain paced the Pirates (3-1) with 15 kills, seven digs
and six blocks.
Ventura improved to 2-2.
Huskies blank UCI
* SOCCER: The UC Irvine men’s soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision
to host Washington in the Husky Fever Classic, Friday in Seattle.
The Huskies (6-2-1), ranked No. 10 in the nation, outshot the
Anteaters, 17-9.
Irvine (2-5-0), was blanked for the third time this season. The
Anteaters have lost three straight entering Sunday’s clash with No.
22-ranked Portland to conclude the tournament.
Daniel Marshall and Sean Iliff each had two shots on goal for UCI.
