Hess leads Vanguard to opening win

Senior forward Matt Hess scored two goals and added an assist to lead
the visiting Vanguard University men’s soccer team to a 4-0
nonconference victory against Westminster College to begin the season
Wednesday in Salt Lake City.
Estancia High product Armando Ortiz tallied two assists while
Mariano Salcedo and David McAulay added goals for the Lions, who
outshot Westminster, 20-6. Lions’ junior goalkeeper Tommaso Bianchi
made three saves.
Roadrunners spoil Pirates’ opener
* SOCCER: Martin Galvan scored with 10 minutes remaining, keeping
the host Rio Hondo College men’s soccer team undefeated following a
3-2 nonconference victory over Orange Coast Wednesday.
Miguel Ochoa and Matt Schirmer scored for Coast, playing its
season opener against a team that has already defeated Mt. San
Antonio, ranked No. 1 in the state for a time last season.
Carlos Lopez scored two goals, one on a penalty kick, for Rio
Hondo (3-0) after Ochoa gave Coast a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute off
an assist by Irwin Salas. Balbas Jerrod assisted on Schirmer’s
strike, which tied the game at 2 in the 61st minute.
Coast goalkeeper Trent Painter made five saves.
Orange Coast faces host Santa Barbara City at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
