Lions fiddle around with tribute

JIM DE BOOM
The Costa Mesa Orange Coast Breakfast Lions Club is sponsoring a
performance by Eddie Carroll in a one-man tribute to Jack Benny at 4
p.m. on Sept. 26 at Plummer Auditorium in Fullerton.
“This is the major fundraiser for the club,” said club President
Bob Walker.
The list of charities the 20-member Lions Club supports includes
City of Hope, Environmental Nature Center, Youth Employment Service,
Orange Coast College Scholarship Program, Think Together Shalimar
Centers, Boy Scouts of America and the Newport Mesa Schools
Foundation.
Carroll’s achievements in the entertainment field have spanned
every area of show business -- the Broadway stage, motion pictures,
television, movies of the week, a weekly series, and especially his
acclaimed, one-man show, “Jack Benny: Laughter In Bloom.” It promises
to be an exciting and very funny afternoon for those of us who
watched Benny on television.
Show tickets are available at $45, $35 and $25 each and can be
purchased by calling Lions Club member Walden Hughes at (714)
545-0318 or by visiting the club’s website, https://www.cmoclions.org.
CARIBBEAN NIGHTS FOR ST. JUDE
The annual St. Jude Charity Event, Caribbean Nights, will be held
at the Newport Dunes at 7 p.m. on Aug. 28th and will feature Dread
Zeppelin. The celebrity masters of ceremonies will be Kimberly
Williams from the movie, “Father of the Bride” and the TV series
“According to Jim” and Poppy Montgomery of the CBS drama “Without a
Trace,” Barbara Howarth said.
Tickets for the event are available at $150 per person and include
dinner, a silent and a voice auction and entertainment.
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is internationally
recognized for its pioneering work in finding cures and saving
children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. Founded by the
late entertainer Danny Thomas and based in Memphis, Tenn., St. Jude
freely shares its discoveries with scientific and medical communities
around the world. No family ever pays for treatments not covered by
insurance, and families without insurance are never asked to pay. St.
Jude is financially supported by American Lebanese Syrian Associated
Charities, its fund-raising organization. For more information or for
tickets, call (800) 227-6737.
