The Newport Beach American Little League 11-year old All-Star team
defeated Lake Forest Blue, 15-6, Monday night at Wagon Wheel Sports
Park in Trabuco Canyon in the third round of the District 55
tournament.
Newport Beach Manager Tom Morris said he was happy with the group
effort in the win.
“This was truly a team win,” he said. “Our whole team was hitting.
Everybody gave a contribution.”
Newport collected 14 hits in the game from nine players, including
a three-hit performance from pitcher Eric Morris, who had two doubles
and a single.
Newport Beach raced out to a 6-2 lead after the first two innings
and increased it to 10-5 two innings later thanks to multiple singles
by Mitch Gardner, Peter Markel, Weston Nielsen and Bruce Bearer.
Also producing at the plate with singles were Jack Schloemer,
Brennan Anderson, Sandon Griffin and Sam Cubiero.
The win had a bit of revenge element to it because Lake Forest
defeated the Newport Beach National All-Stars, 12-7, the round
before.
“We were avenging the National Little League loss,” the elder
Morris said. “I talked to the National Little League manager, Scott
Jones, and he gave me some tips on how to play them.”
Newport played San Clemente Wednesday night. Results will appear
