Veteran officer to retire after 31 years
A retirement party will be held for Police Sgt. Greg Bartz on June
11 at El Adobe Capistrano Restaurant.
Bartz has served 31 years in the department. Among the more
harrowing experiences in his career: the Bluebird Canyon landslide
and the 1993 Fire Storm.
“He is ‘the’ Laguna Beach cop,” Sgt. Darin Lenyi said.

Police to add third tow service
The Laguna Beach Police Department will add To’ and Mo’ Tow Truck
Co. to its fleet of official towing services.
Tow trucks are called by police to the scene of an accident, to
impound vehicles involved in a crime or to remove illegally parked
vehicles from public property.
Pacific Towing and Bill Page Towing previously rotated services to
the department on a weekly basis.
Police Chief James Spreine said Tuesday that he thought two
companies were enough and recommended denying the request of To’ and
Mo’ to be added to the roster.
“However, this is not an issue that I want to battle the council
about” Spreine said.
The council voted 4-0, Councilwoman Elizabeth Pearson absent, to
hire the third company, subject to the usual background checks.
Police to hold DUI checkpoint
The Laguna Beach Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint
Saturday. The site will not be announced.
Some vehicles will be waved through the checkpoint. Others will be
stopped and drivers will be greeted. Based on police observations,
some drivers will be asked to take field sobriety tests. Those who
fail will be subject to arrest.
Guidelines for checkpoints were set by the U.S. Supreme Court.
