Ocean View plays Crespi tough in 3-2 loss

Ocean View High was denied a spot in the CIF-Southern Section

Division III baseball semifinals by Crespi, but not before the

Seahawks gave the division’s top-seed all it could handle before

succumbing, 3-2, at Encino.

The Golden West League co-champion had a chance to catch the

Mission League champion Celts in the seventh inning, but left runners

stranded at first and second base.

Derek Walsh delivered a key, one out double down the left field

line to ignite the late rally.

“I think we gave Crespi one of their toughest games in quite a

while,” Ocean View Coach Aaron Kavanagh said.

Kavanagh also praised the pitching of Jeff Roth.

Roth, a tri-captain along with Walsh and Joe Jameson, scattered

six hits and struck out four.

He also had an RBI triple to aid his cause.

“He threw a heck of a game for us,” Kavanagh said of the junior.

“He’s one of our team captains and he really came through in a big

way, both on the mound and at the plate.”

Ocean View opened the playoffs with a 4-1 win at Freeway League

No. 2 Sonora, then routed San Antonio League runner-up Nogales, 12-4.

The Seahawks finished the year with an 18-8 record.

Crespi advanced with a 26-4 record to face Suburban League

champion La Mirada in semifinal round action.
