Angels upset Cardinals, 2-0

Jamie Heinecke tossed a six-hit shutout to help the Angels upset the

top-seeded Cardinals, 2-0, in the second round of the Newport Beach

Little League Majors Division playoffs May 10.

J.D. Dawn made a diving catch in center field with the bases

loaded to quell a Cardinal rally. Hunter Meece’s catch in right field

ended the game.

Dawn also contributed offensively with a triple and two RBIs while

Heinecke, Mike Moorhead and David Weiland (run scored) all added

singles.

Cory Vitalo’s two hits led the Cardinals and he also contributed

three innings on the mound.

Michael Bloom, Andrew Dunlap, Josh Starnes and Riley Conroy all

added hits for the Cardinals.

In other second-round playoff action:

* Mariners 3, Padres 1:

J.D. Abbott of the Mariners stuck out 13 and allowed just one hit

in six innings to lead the Mariners.

Chris Freeman’s solo home run in the bottom of the sixth broke a

1-1 tie and Abbott later scored the third run on a passed ball.

Cameron Koziara, who singled and scored in the fourth, scattered

three hits and struck out 11 in six innings on the mound for the

Padres.

Parker Werline singled and scored in the first for the Mariners.

Jeff Condino, Evan Daniele, John Doering, Chris Fauntleroy, Connor

Gaal, Michael Haeri, Chase Nugent and Chris Seagrean led the

Mariners’ defense.

In first-round playoff action:

* Angels 10, Braves 9 (12 innings):

Blake Thomsen, celebrating his 12th birthday, doubled and scored

the game-winning run and outfielder Armani Ferrante threw out the

tying run at the plate to end the May 8 game.

The Angels scored five runs in the sixth, including a key hit from

Heinecke, to tie the game and held the Braves scoreless in the final

two innings.

Weliand added a running catch.

Dawn (4 for 5, three doubles), Thomsen (3 for 4), Nick Flamson (3

for 4) and Ferrante (single and double) led the Angels’ offense while

Emil Peterson tallied his first hit of the year.

Dawn pitched six strong innings -- five scoreless -- and Heinecke

shut down the Braves in the final two innings.

Jack Gerdau, Austin Blodgett and Parker Stone each had three

singles while Dylan Campbell and Danny Borg-Sundstrom each added two.

Brett Klein also singled.

In regular-season play:

* Cardinals 5, Diamondbacks 4:

The Cardinals won their seventh consecutive game and clinched the

National League division title with the win.

Vitalo struck out the last batter of the game with the bases

loaded.

The Cardinals opened up a 5-0 lead on a home run by Bloom, a

double by Dunlap and singles by Alex Morrison, Josh and Jake Starnes

and Vitalo.

Nick Treadaway, Conroy, Clark Cashion, Stephen McAfee, Billy

Macdonald and Zac Cabin also played important roles in the title

game.

Beau Attyah homered and singled while Grant Davis added offensive

punch for the D-backs.

Tommy Colton and Brian Hurst provided strong pitching and defense

for the D-backs.

* Mariners 5, Padres 2:

The Mariners (12-4) won the last game of their season, finishing

second to the Reds in the American League.

Freeman, Abbott and Doering all pitched well, holding the Padres

(7-9) to one earned run.

Doering went 3 for 3 with a double from each side of the plate and

scored a run in the first on Werline’s single. Condino added an RBI

single in the inning.

Fauntleroy and Seagrean each had hits for the Mariners while Haeri

walked.

Gaal caught six solid innings behind the plate while Daniele and

Nugent each made solid defensive plays.

* Braves 8, Dodgers 7 (seven innings):

Gerdau’s single knocked in Dylan Varner with the game-winning run

in the final regular season game for both teams.

Gerdau pitched three scoreless innings and added three hits and

three RBIs.

Josh Harrison tallied three hits while Nick Manning and Blodgett

each added two hits. Justin Tucker also added a hit.

Harrison allowed no hits and no runs in the final two innings of

relief, getting his first win of the season.

Campbell caught the entire game and Anthony Mainero caught a pop

up to end a Dodger threat in the second inning.

Ben Capaldi led the Dodgers with two hits while Chase Carlile and

Doug Watt each added singles. Watt pitched well.

* Braves 7, Red Sox 5:

Stone singled, doubled and scored two runs to lead the Braves.

The Braves built a 7-1 lead before the Red Sox responded with four

runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Campbell, Gerdau, Jed Thayer (two runs scored), Harrison and

Manning each produced timely hits.

Thayer pitched three scoreless and hitless innings to notch the

victory while Klein and Borg-Sundstrom anchored the defense.

Wes Nielson pitched well for the Red Sox, who also got timely hits

from Max Colvin.

* Cubs 6, Red Sox 2:

Emery Molnar and Austin Jones held the Red Sox to three hits and

helped the Cubs earn their fourth win in five games April 24.

Chasen McNaughtan, John Hold, Scott Youngman and Trent Boras led

the offense.

* Cubs 2, Dodgers 1:

The Cubs, who started the season 0-8, ended the game with a 5-3-2

double play. Molnar fired to catcher Preston Risser for the final

out.

Boras pitched a complete game and was backed by the strong defense

of center fielder Sean Okita.

* Cubs 5, Giants 3:

Jones earned his second victory of the year after surrendering a

two-run, first-inning home run to the Giants’ Patrick Vorwerck.

Merline and Austin Metzger each made key defensive plays while

Risser and Youngman provided timely hitting.

* Cubs 5, D-backs 2:

Jones struck out 12 in a two-hitter over 5 1/3 innings.

Blake Miller and Parker Ewles led the Cubs’ offense.
