Man arrested for attempted carjacking

Police arrested a San Diego man they believe tried to carjack a

Huntington Beach couple.

Delbert Eugene Wormwood, 41, was charged with attempted carjacking

after he allegedly used a knife while trying to steal a car on March

30 outside of a Super Mex restaurant near the intersection of Pacific

Coast Highway and Warner Avenue.

Wormwood confessed that his plan was to take a car from

18-year-old Heather Anderson and Paul Orellana, police said.

Wormwood waited near the car for Anderson and Orellana to return

from picking up food from the restaurant. He told police his goal was

to push Anderson away from the car, anticipating Orellana would try

to help her. Police said Anderson got the upper hand when she saw

Wormwood rush at her, and managed to push him off and get into the

car, locking the doors.

An Orange County Sheriff’s Deputy was in the area, and was

alerted, police said. Sheriffs detained Wormwood until Huntington

officers arrived to arrest Wormwood, who was positively identified by

both victims.

Armed robber steals prescription drugs

Thousands of dollars worth of prescription medication was stolen

in an armed robbery at a Huntington Beach Walgreens.

At about 1:57 a.m. on April 1, an man armed with a handgun

approached the counter at the Walgreens in the 17500 block of Beach

Boulevard, police said.

The robber jumped over the counter and forced an employee,

58-year-old Bailey Jue of Huntington Beach to lay on the floor, Sgt.

John Domingo said.

The thief made off with about $2,100 worth of medicine. Police

described him as being 5-foot-8 or 5-foot-9 and weighing about 200

pounds. He wore a dark hooded sweatshirt during the robbery.

Surf City man dies in fatal scooter accident

A Huntington Beach man was killed Sunday on motor scooter when he

and another motorist crashed on Pacific Coast Highway.

Lars Hoglund, 59, collided with 19-year-old Jonathan Hadnot, of

Carlsbad, at about 5:41 p.m. Sunday between Huntington and 1st

streets. Hadnot was in a Toyota Scion.

Hadnot changed lanes and slowed down to park along the curb just

before the accident occurred, police said.

The impact knocked Hoglund and his scooter to the ground, and

Hoglund suffered fatal head injuries when his helmet fell off and his

head struck the curb.

Hadnot was not arrested, and the accident is still under

investigation. Police do not believe alcohol was a factor in the

crash.

Two men arrested in Ecstasy ring

Two Huntington Beach residents were charged with being involved in

an international drug dealing ring.

Sonha Kim Tram, 29, and Jonathan Duan Diep, 27, pleaded not guilty

on Monday to charges of conspiracy to distribute ecstasy and

distribution and possession with intent to distribute Ecstasy.

Charges against the two Surf City residents and 16 others were

outlined in two federal indictments that were returned by a Los

Angeles grand jury on March 24, following a two-year investigation

dubbed “Operation: Candy Box.”

Tram and Diep were arrested on March 31. If convicted each could

spend up to 20 years in jail.

Charges in the indictments outlined the operations of an alleged

ecstasy selling operation stretching from Canada to Southern

California.

Michael Lowe, the federal prosecutor in the case described the

alleged organization as “probably the largest Ecstasy ring that’s

ever been dismantled in this type of investigation.”

The scope of the alleged crimes stretch beyond the charges filed

in Los Angeles.

Authorities made 130 arrests in the investigation, Drug

Enforcement Agency spokesman Jose Martinez said.

The case is scheduled to go to trial on May 25.
