Lightning’s Cordier strikes back in win

Sage Hill School junior Tristan Cordier earned a 6-3 win over Adrian
Ang, who defeated him earlier in the season, to highlight the
Lightning’s 15-3 Academy League boys tennis victory over visiting
Oxford Academy Friday.
Three weeks ago, Cordier lost, 4-6, to Ang, who was a first-team
all-league performer last year. Cordier also won his other two sets.
Ara Demirjian and Robert Wee won two sets in singles for the
Lightning (8-5, 5-1 in league) ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section
Division V.
The Sage Hill tandem of Ian Livingston and Dan Chin, and the
Michael Cassel, Michael Garrison duo swept in doubles.

Costa Mesa outduels Orange
* SOFTBALL: Uyen Mai went 3 for 4 and Jane-E Yamamoto had a
2-for-2 performance to help lead the Costa Mesa High softball team to
a 6-2 Golden West League victory over host Orange Friday.
Janae Rivera pounded a double for the Mustangs (6-9, 2-1 in
league). Mesa Coach Sharon Uhl said her team took advantage of four
errors by Orange (2-1), which had eight hits to the Mustangs’ 10.
Jackie Butler struck out three and walked one to improve to 6-7.

Estancia sweeps past Panthers
* VOLLEYBALL: The Estancia High boys volleyball team protected its
Golden West League lead by sweeping host Orange, 25-13, 25-7, 25-10, Friday.
Kris Hartwell had 10 kills while fellow seniors Scott Sankey and
Josh Kornegay added nine and eight, respectively, to help the Eagles
improve to 12-1, 6-0 in league.
Estancia, ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division III, also
received 33 assists from junior setter Trevor Holmes.
Sophomore Dallas Kopp had five kills and senior Brad Larsen
continued to add his steady passing to the winning mix.
Mustangs prevail in five games
* VOLLEYBALL: Costa Mesa High’s boys volleyball team clawed its
way back to defeated visiting Westminster, 21-25, 20-25, 25-21,
25-23, 15-13, in a Golden West League match Friday.
Ryan Bagwell led Mesa (5-5, 2-2 in league) with 14 kills and added
five stuff blocks while senior Mitch Mandel slammed 12 kills to go
with five stuff blocks.
Garrett Walthers tallied 10 stuff blocks to get Mesa back into the
match after Westminster had served well during the first two games,
Mesa Coach Dave Sorrells said.
Joyce propels Sage Hill to win
* VOLLEYBALL: Visiting Sage Hill School overcame a slow start to
post a 22--25, 25-14, 25-18, 25-11 Academy League boys volleyball win
over St. Margaret’s Friday.
Senior Kevin Joyce had 21 kills to pace the Lightning (8-1, 3-1 in
league), while Macsun Frederick added nine kills, five blocks and
three ace serves.
St. Margaret’s fell to 1-12, 1-3.
Sage rallies for comeback victory
* SOFTBALL: Katrina Redelsheimer, Jessica Torina and Katie Puishys
singled to key a three-run, sixth-inning rally that led host Sage
Hill School to a 5-3 Academy League softball win over Whitney Friday.
Rebecca Hembarsky had a two-run double to back her complete-game
pitching effort for the winners (4-7-1, 1-1 in league). Also, Alex
Shitanishi had two hits and a run for the Lightning.
Whitney is 0-2 in league.

Eagles avert Saints’ no-hit attempt
* SOFTBALL: Santa Ana High’s Mallory Marquez delivered a
one-hitter and the Estancia softball team lost, 4-0, in Golden West
League action at the Eagles’ diamond Friday.
Estancia sophomore Ravyn Kostenbader broke up Marquez’s no-hit bid
with a bloop single to left field in the third inning. The Eagles
dropped to 5-7, 1-3 in league while the Saints improved to 10-2-1,
2-1.

Waves overwhelm ‘Eaters in four
* VOLLEYBALL: The UC Irvine men’s volleyball team could not
sustain its first-game momentum and lost, 30-20, 22-30, 24-30, 24-30
to host Pepperdine in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action
Thursday.
Matt Webber recorded 18 kills to lead the Anteaters (10-16, 4-13).
David Smith and Jimmy Pelzel added 15 kills each. Brett Reid amassed
60 assists for UCI. Fred Winters’ 24 kills led the Waves (14-6,
11-6).
