Costa Mesa High junior Sarah Bowman has been named the Golden West
League’s Most Valuable Player in girls water polo, leading a strong
contingent from the Mustangs and Estancia on the all-league teams.
Bowman, a two-meter player who battled tendinitis in her shoulder
the majority of the season, scored 83 goals and helped lead the
Mustangs to their first outright league championship. Costa Mesa was
17-13, 6-0 in league. Bowman scored 24 goals in league play.
Seniors Jessica Steenhard (46 goals) and Quyen Nguyen, a goalie
who had 157 saves, as well as juniors Allyson Harris (29 goals) and
Christine Twohig (32 goals) represented Coach Tim Postiff’s Mustangs
on the All-Golden West League first team, which also featured
Estancia senior Marilyn Reich. The Mustangs’ Chandra Malapira, a
sophomore who scored 27 goals, Carley Millian, a junior who had 19
goals, along with Estancia sophomore Katie Mahan and Eagles’ junior
Courtney Hess earned second-team honors.
Bowman, Steenhard and Harris received all-league recognition last
year when the Mustangs were tri-champions of the Golden West League.
Coach Bob Bandaruk’s Eagles did not have any all-league players last
year.
