Pelzel earns honors

UC Irvine senior All-American Jimmy Pelzel has been named Lauds &
Laurels Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year.
The award recognizes a student-athlete who has participated in and
made significant contributions to their sport and team and exhibited
outstanding sportsmanship. Pelzel will be recognized at a banquet May
27 at The Westin South Coast Plaza.
Over the past 33 years, the UCI Alumni Association has presented
the Lauds & Laurels Awards to honor and celebrate the accomplishments
of alumni, students, faculty, staff and community friends of UC
Irvine.
Pelzel is currently ranked sixth nationally in kills (4.87) and
eighth in points (5.54). He leads the Mountain Pacific Sports
Federation in kills (5.14) and is third in points (5.63). The outside
hitter shares the team lead in service aces with 14 and is just six
shy of breaking the school record for career service aces which is 93
held by Erick Helenihi (1999-02) and Donnie Rafter (1996-99). Earlier
this season, Pelzel broke the school record for career kills (1,467)
and career attack attempts (3,122).
