Lim advances to Masters

Kid Lim, a senior wrestler for Newport Harbor High, finished fifth in
the 119-pound division at the CIF Southern Division championships at
Westminster Saturday, which qualifies him for the Masters Meet Friday
at 1 p.m. at Fountain Valley.
Lim defeated Freddie Valencia of Northview, 8-7, in an exciting
fifth-place match to advance to the Masters Meet.
With the score tied, 5-5, in the third period, Lim scored a
reversal and also received a point because of an illegal move by
Valencia. Lim defeated Mike Vandal of Foothill by pin in 37 seconds
in the third round of consolation. Lim also pinned Cabrillo’s Steve
Borchett in two minutes, 50 seconds in the consolation quarterfinal.
Lim lost by pin to Laguna Hills’ Sonny Siegal in a consolation
semifinal. However, Lim bounced back with the victory over Valencia.
Mustangs edged, 9-8
* WATER POLO: The Costa Mesa High girls water polo team nearly
upset No. 4 seed Jurupa Valley, which defeated the visiting Mustangs,
9-8, in a quarterfinal of the CIF Southern Section Division VI
playoffs Saturday.
Jessica Steenhard led Costa Mesa (17-13) with four goals,
including her final tally with 30 seconds left that brought the
Mustangs to within, 9-8. But Costa Mesa did not get the ball back
until there were two seconds remaining.
The Mustangs outscored Jurupa Valley, 4-1, in the fourth quarter.
Sarah Bowman scored two goals, while Allyson Harris and Annie Le
added one each. Senior goalie Quyen Nguyen had four saves for the
Mustangs. Laura Uribe led Jurupa Valley (20-9) with four goals.

‘Eaters hold on for win
* BASEBALL: The UC Irvine baseball team jumped to a 6-0 lead in
the first three innings and held on to edge host Arizona, 6-5, in a
nonconference game Saturday.
Brett Dalton went 2 for 5 with two runs scored and an RBI while
Matt Fisher was 3 for 5 with a run scored. Matt Anderson had one hit
and two RBIs for the Anteaters (5-2), who knocked off Arizona (5-3) a
second straight game.
Glenn Swanson picked up his first win of the season after going 5
2/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out
eight. Blair Erickson struck out two in 1 1/3 innings to earn his
fourth save.

Feeley, Keligian medal
* WRESTLING: Corona del Mar High juniors Brian Feeley and Andrew
Keligian earned sixth-place medals in their respective weight classes
at the CIF Inland Division wrestling championships Saturday at Ayala
in Chino Hills.
Feeley (135-pound division) and Keligian (215) won their first two
consolation matches, but lost their final two. Keligian lost, 3-2, in
the fifth-place match. Corona del Mar junior Jon Dean (140) lost in
the third round of consolation and was eliminated.
UCI beats Long Beach
* BASKETBALL: Kristen Green scored 17 points with five assists and
Christina Callaway (14 points) and Shayna Stanley (13) scored in
double figures as the UC Irvine women’s basketball team defeated host
Long Beach State, 60-50, Saturday night in Big West Conference
action. UCI improved to 6-16, 5-9 in conference; the 49ers fell to
10-13, 6-8.
Cardinal tops UCI
* WATER POLO: UC Irvine, ranked No. 13, lost to No. 3 and host
Stanford, 8-1, in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women’s water
polo on Saturday.
Aleah Amr scored the only goal for the Anteaters (5-5, 1-2 in the
MPSF). Stanford scored five goals in the first quarter and cruised.
Former Corona del Mar High standout Christina Hewko scored a goal for
Stanford. UCI’s Sunceray Chamblee recorded 11 goalie saves.
Olvera’s gem leads VU
* SOFTBALL: Freshman hurler Jennifer Olvera pitched her first
collegiate complete-game shutout Saturday while spinning a one-hitter
for visiting Vanguard University in the Lions’ 8-0 nonconference
softball victory.
Olvera struck out eight in seven innings and VU catcher Rachael
Rolle smacked a three-run home run to spark the offensive attack.
Rachel Bomgren, VU’s leadoff hitter and shortstop, hit a solo home
run. Pelzel sets UCI mark
* VOLLEYBALL: UC Irvine’s Jimmy Pelzel became the school’s
all-time leader in kills, but Penn State rallied from an 0-2 deficit
to defeat the ‘Eaters, 26-30, 28-30, 30-21, 30-26, 18-16, at the
Springfield (Mass.) College tournament Saturday.
Pelzel had 18 kills and earned all-tournament honors. He has 1,432
career kills.
Vanguard falls in rain
* BASEBALL: In rainy weather Saturday during the Golden State
Athletic Conference baseball opener, host Vanguard lost to The
Master’s in the first game of a doubleheader, 10-8, while the second
game was suspended in the seventh inning due to darkness and will be
continued March 27 at The Master’s with a 4-4 tie.
In the first game, VU’s Scott Martine went 3 for 5 with two runs
scored and two RBIs, while teammates Adam Yoder, Mike Sparks and
Nikolaus Crouch had two hits each in the Lions’ 11-hit attack.
UCI swimmers win
* SWIMMING AND DIVING: UC Irvine’s Dan Simonsen won the men’s
100-meter breaststroke in 55.22 Friday in the Big West Conference
swimming and diving championships at Belmont Plaza.
On Saturday, UCI’s Phil Garcia captured the men’s 100 freestyle
(44.72) and Lara Bjargardottir won the women’s 200 breaststroke
(2:15.66).
Vanguard sweeps Hope
* BASKETBALL: The visiting Vanguard men’s and women’s basketball
teams were victorious Saturday against Hope in Golden State Athletic
Conference action. Brian Kim had 31 points as the VU men defeated
Hope, 92-66, and Kelly Schmidt scored 19 points as the VU women won,
87-49.
Eagles fall to Rosary
* BASKETBALL: The Rosary High girls basketball team lived up to
its No. 1 seeding with a 93-49 victory over visiting Estancia in the
first round of the CIF Southern Section Division III-A playoffs
Saturday night.
Nancy Castro led Estancia with 19 points, four blocks and 10
rebounds while going 5 of 5 at the free-throw line. Trisha Wase
scored 14 points while Imelda Pena added 12.
