Corona del Mar High, an at-large entry from the Pacific Coast
League, is the lone Newport-Mesa boys basketball team remaining in
the CIF Southern Section playoffs, which continue today when the Sea
Kings play host to fourth-seeded La Canada at 7:30 p.m., in the
second round of Division III-A play.
The champions of the Rio Hondo League, La Canada (25-2) posted a
67-56 victory over Northview in the first round. Corona del Mar
(14-13), led by 29 points from senior forward Pancho Seaborn, went on
the road and upset De Anza League champion Vista del Lago, 75-50.
In other playoff action, first-round play in boys soccer begins
today, with three local entrants playing home games at 3:15 p.m.
Sage Hill (11-5), the No. 4 seed in Division VI, plays host to St.
Bernard (7-8-6). In Division II action, Pacific Coast League champion
Corona del Mar will battle Moreno Valley (18-4-2), the third-place
team from the Ivy League and Newport Harbor will take to Davidson
Field against the third-place team from the Century League, El Dorado
(8-11-2).
