Another suspicious package found
Newport Beach firefighters responded to a report of a suspicious
powdery substance that was in an envelope received in the mail at
about 9 a.m. Saturday. No one was injured.
The envelope was delivered to an office in the 20100 block of
Birch Street in Santa Ana Heights. After opening the envelope, a
tenant on the building’s second floor called police who called in
firefighters and a hazmat crew from Anaheim.
Hazmat crews determined that the substance was chalk, but will
forward the material and information to the U.S. Postmaster’s
investigation service for further examination. During the
investigation, southbound lanes of Birch Street were closed off.
This is the second incident in less than a week that hazmat crews
were called because of suspicious mail in Newport-Mesa.
