Seahawks win boys’, girls’ hoop titles

The Ocean View High girls’ basketball team notched its 20th victory
of the season and clinched the Golden West League championship after
pounding host Santa Ana, 62-22.
In improving to 20-2 overall and 11-0 in league play, the Seahawks
secured the league crown as Leila Abufarie scored nine points in an
effort that included 12 rebounds, seven assists and four steals.
Ocean View also downed Westminster, 49-39. Ahkiah Hunter scored a
game-best 18 points and DJ Butler contributed 15 more to the
Seahawks’ cause.
In other girls’ basketball action, Esperanza moved into a
first-place tie by handing visiting Edison its first league defeat,
51-42.
Valerie Katayama scored a game-high 18 points, Jessica Harris
scored 13 points and Rebecca Kepilino added 10 more for the Chargers.
Marina moved into a third-place tie in the Sunset League with a
53-44 win at Fountain Valley.
Allison Budzinski netted 14 points and Rachael Maulit scored 12
points to lead the Vikings.
Huntington Beach played Los Alamitos tough in a 45-41 loss. Katia
Hadj-Hamou’s 21 points topped all scorers and Vicky Batistelli added
10 points for the Oilers.
In earlier girls’ action, Kepilino scored 23 points and Edison
defeated host Marina, 38-31.
Rachael Maulit’s nine points led Marina.
Huntington fell to Esperanza, 56-37. Hadj-Hamou scored 19 points
for the Oilers.
In boys’ basketball, Ocean View clinched the Golden West League
title with a 90-43 whipping of Westminster.
Greg Okwudibonye hit a trio of three-point baskets en route to 13
points, Matt Sargeant scored 12 points and Ryan Lee scored 10 points
to lead 15 Seahawks in the scoring column.
Sargeant and Vartan Mguerian each had two three-point baskets.
Ocean View also rallied past Orange, 53-39, as Okwudibonye had 18
points and five steals and Sargeant posted 17 points and four steals.
Marina remained a game behind Los Alamitos in the Sunset League
race following a 66-40 drilling of Fountain Valley.
Matt Brennan’s 18 points led a Viking charge that saw Stephen
Becker and Jeff Delaunay hit double figures with 15 and 13 points,
respectively.
In an earlier league clash, Marina took care of Edison, 67-53 and
avenged an earlier loss to the Chargers.
James Lambert scored 18 points, Brennan finished with 16 points,
Delaunay scored 14 and Becker had 10 points for the Vikings.
Kevin Reed and Alex Wright each had 13 points for the Chargers.
Huntington Beach fell to Esperanza, 72-57. Eric Ruziecki’s 14
points paced the Oilers.
Edison played Esperanza tough, but ended up on the short side of a
60-52 score. Alex Wright and Thomas Marcin each scored 12 points to
pace the Chargers.
Los Alamitos rode a big first half effort to score a 68-44 home
victory over Huntington Beach. Ricky Fugnetti scored eight points to
lead the Oilers.
In boys’ soccer, Edison reached the 20-victory plateau for the
season and moved within one game of wrapping up an unbeaten
championship in the Sunset League with a 2-0 win over visiting
Esperanza.
Ian Cone scored both goals for the Chargers and Tom Palica had
three saves.
In girls’ soccer, Edison was a 1-0 winner over Esperanza. Kelsey
Bowman had eight saves and Christian Crawford scored the match’s lone
goal.
The Chargers also routed Marina, 7-0, as Brianne Wahrenbrock
scored three goals and Bowman had four saves.
In girls’ water polo, Edison downed Dos Pueblos, 10-5, at the
Irvine Southern California Championships.
