Newport Harbor edged in final

The Newport Harbor High girls water polo team, which soundly defeated
Foothill in a semifinal, lost, 7-6, in overtime to Santa Barbara in
the championship game of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions
Saturday.
Kami Craig, a junior for the Dons, scored her fifth goal in the
first three-minute overtime period for a 7-6 lead and Santa Barbara
held off Newport (12-2) the rest of the way. The Sailors trailed
Santa Barbara, 6-5, late in the fourth quarter, but Sarah Mutt’s goal
sent the game into overtime.
Anne Belden led the Sailor with two goals, while Melissa Wheeler,
Ashling Taylor, Mutt and Jessica Ball added one each. Terin Cottam
and Kim Housepian recorded seven and fives saves, respectively.
Ball led the Sailors to a 9-5 semifinal win over Foothill, scoring
six goals and delivering two assists. Carolyn Conway contributed two
goals and Belden one. Housepian and Cottam had four saves each.
At halftime, when Newport led, 4-3, Sailors Coach Bill Barnett and
assistant Jason Lynch left because they had to travel to attend a
national water polo function in St. Louis, Mo., Ball said. Junior
varsity coach Brian Malestrom took over as head coach for the rest of
the half and against the Dons.
It was the second time in one week, Newport defeated the Knights.
The Sailors scored a 10-9 overtime win over Foothill Wednesday, when
host Newport ended the Knights’ 49-game winning streak.

CdM takes fifth place
* WATER POLO: Sophomore Ashley Chandler scored a sudden-death goal
in overtime to lift the Corona del Mar girls water polo team to a 6-5
victory over Los Alamitos to finish fifth place in the Santa Barbara
Tournament of Champions Saturday.
Katya Eadington provided two goals, while Vivian Liao, Jordan Anae
and Camille Hewko contributed one each for the Sea Kings (8-7), who
rallied from a 4-2 fourth-quarter deficit. CdM went up, 5-4, with one
minute left but Los Alamitos tied the game, shortly thereafter.
Goalie Brittany Fullen recorded 11 saves, and she stopped 14 shots
in the Sea Kings’ 8-7 fifth-place semifinal victory over Upland
earlier in the day. Liao led CdM with four goals, while Anae and
Katie Kubas scored two each.

Lions improve to 14-1
* BASKETBALL: Five Vanguard University women’s basketball players
scored in double figures Saturday night as the Lions defeated host
Azusa Pacific, 81-53, in Golden State Athletic Conference action.
VU’s Kelly Schmidt scored 20 points and pulled down 13 rebounds,
both game-high figures, while teammates Lindsay McClellan (16 points
off the bench), Lacey Burns (15 points and five rebounds), Lacey
Mills (12 points, seven rebounds and three assists) and Lisa Faulkner
(11 points and six assists) contributed to the convincing victory for
Coach Russ Davis’ fourth-ranked Lions.
Vanguard (14-1, 6-1 in the GSAC) outscored APU (10-6, 3-4) in the
second half, 52-29, while shooting 56% from the field (14 of 25) and
20 of 24 from the free-throw line.

VU men fall at APU
* BASKETBALL: Host Azusa Pacific sank 14 three-pointers Saturday
night to help them earn an 80-64 Golden State Athletic Conference
men’s basketball win over Vanguard University.
Brett Michel and Ryan Dillon had five three balls apiece and Nate
Pratt added three more to help the hosts improve to 15-4, 6-1 in
conference.
Horace Wormely had 18 points, three assists and two steals to lead
the Lions, who fell to 8-9, 2-5.
Brian Kim was the only other Vanguard scorer in double figures
with 13.
APU hit 14 of 30 three-point tries and finished 30 of 58 from the
field for the game (51.7%).
Vanguard shot just 40% from the field (22 of 55), including 6 of
14 from threedom.

Stanford tops UC Irvine
* VOLLEYBALL: UC Irvine’s Jimmy Pelzel recorded a match-high 37
kills, but host Stanford rallied to defeat the Anteaters’ men’s
volleyball team Saturday night in nonconference action in five games,
25-30, 28-30, 30-27, 30-28, 17-15.
Spencer Bemus added 11 kills and 11 digs for UCI (1-1), while
setter Brett Reid had 72 assists. Stanford improved to 2-0.
