Finals slated Tuesday

The Sea View League club surfing finals will be held on Tuesday at
the 56th Street site in Newport Beach, starting at 6:15 a.m. and
running to about noon.
The events are short board, long board, body board and girls
short/long board.
Competing will be Newport Harbor, Calvary Chapel, Mater Dei, Santa
Margarita, Laguna Beach and Los Alamitos.
Based on performance during the season each team will designate
their best six short boarders, two long boarders, two body boarders
and two girls.
They will compete for individual honors as well as a combined
effort for team score.
The short board will have six individuals competing in each of six
preliminary heats. The top four of each heat advances to the
quarterfinals.
The top three from each quarterfinal heat advances to one of the
two six-person semifinal heats.
The top three from each semifinal heat advances to the finals.
The long board, body board and girls events start with the
semifinals. Each has two heats of six competing with the top three
advancing to the six-person finals.
Newport Harbor has won the team award for the last five years and
goes into the competition as the only undefeated school at 10-0.
Individual competition is expected to be heated in the short
board. Laguna Beach bested Newport in that category twice during the
regular season.
The Newport Harbor girls team also split with Laguna during the
regular season.
Newport’s long board team is unbeaten.
Newport Harbor’s entry consists of senior Geoff Rill, junior Tom
Holbrook, senior Will Anderson, senior David Neira, senior Alex Knost
and freshman Brighton Brandenburger in the short board, senior Alex
Knost and freshman Chase Smith in the long board, seniors Dan
Kretschmar and Mike Beck in the body board, and senior Amy Lowry and
junior Robin Senour in the girls short/long event.
