Hayley Townsend scored her third goal of the match in overtime
Saturday to lift the Quick Chicks to a 4-3 victory over the Blue
Crush in AYSO Region 117 girls’ Under-12 Division soccer playoff
action.
With the second tied at 3-3 at the end of regulation play,
Townsend netted her third goal with less than a minute to play in the
overtime. From there, the defense of sweeper Kristy Verone, fullbacks
Braelynn Snook and Pouneh Radparvar and goalie Karlee Hodgeman
prevented the Blue Crush from retaliating to lock up the victory.
Niki Cannon’s second-quarter score off a cross from Jessica Parker
put the Quick Chicks on top, 1-0. With the score tied 1-1 later in
the period, Townsend dribbled through a host of defenders and posted
her first goal to give the Quick Chicks a 2-1 halftime advantage.
The third period belonged to the Blue Crush, which scored
consecutive goals and took a 3-2 lead heading into the final quarter.
There, with time running out, Alison Hensley passed to Townsend, who
dribbled around the Blue Crush goalie to score, tying the match and
forcing overtime.

Ice Breakers 2, Golden Eagles 1
The Ice Breakers won their second postseason game by taking this
defensive struggle between two evenly matched teams at Perry School
in Huntington Beach.
Forward Mitchell Phillipy’s footwork positioned the ball near the
Golden Eagles’ net, where his sharp pass found Matthew Steinhaus, who
in turn drilled the ball into the goal for a 1-0 Ice Breakers lead.
The Golden Eagles tied the match up at 1-1, but that deadlock was
broken by a Michael Rowe goal.
Rowe got the game-winning goal when he ran down a loose ball and
put it into the net after a Steinhaus corner kick and then a scramble
near the Golden Eagles’ goal.
The defense of coaches Nigel Rowe and Ken Frens limited the Golden
Eagles to a single goal.
Leading the way were Garrett Hickman and Tommy Vollum, midfielders
Gavin Perdomo and Cole Souza, defenders Matthew Bordas and Nick Frens
and Trevor Verone, Perdomo and Phillipy in goal.
