Saturday’s Game
Laguna Beach (4-1) vs. Calvary Chapel (2-3)
(at Westminster High, 7 p.m.)
Laguna Beach begins its title quest against a Calvary Chapel team
playing its first-ever Pacific Coast League game when the teams meet
Saturday.
A 4-1 showing in nonleague play has given the Breakers momentum
heading into their league opener, but it’s the next five weeks that
will determine whether or not they reach what many players say is
their primary goal: gaining a berth in the upcoming CIF Division IX
playoffs.
In Calvary Chapel, a Santa Ana-based school, Laguna Beach will be
meeting a team that is coming off a 57-28 loss to Mojave.
One positive for the Eagles was quarterback Terry Mermer who threw
for 363 yards and four touchdowns. His favorite target is senior
receiver Davie Mamelli who caught two touchdown passes against
Mojave.
The senior could present problems to the Laguna Beach secondary.
One area the Breakers could exploit Saturday is Calvary’s rush
defense: the Eagles’ surrendered 400 yards in last week’s loss to
Mojave.
The Eagles might find it hard to stop Donnelle Darling. The senior
running back enters the game with 759 rushing yards and has rushed
for more than 125 yards in four of five games, with a high game of
218 yards, which came against El Segundo.
