Estancia boys stunned by Saints in league opener

Estancia High senior Humberto Rojas won his second straight Golden
West League race, but the Eagles’ boys cross country team lost to
host Santa Ana, Thursday at Irvine Park. Diana Rosete led the Eagles
and won the girls race, but the Estancia girls team also lost.
The Saints’ boys team ran the hills very well and won, 24-34,
Estancia Coach Charlie Appell said.
“(The Eagles) were disappointed,” Appell said of his squad which
suffered its first league loss. “They know what they have to do now.
(Santa Ana) had a very good game plan. Our kids got caught.”
Rojas’ first-place clocking was 15:29, while teammate Alex
Cahuantzi finished third (16:05). Aaron Van Geem (ninth, 16:36) and
Abel Flores (10th, 16:49) also finished in the top 10.
On the girls side, Rosete maintained a steady pace and ran out in
front by herself, finishing in 18:47, nearly two minutes before the
next runner came in.
“She ran a good race,” Appell said of Rosete. “It will be a good
race between her and Christine (Bjelland of Costa Mesa) when they run
in the league meet.”
