Long Beach flights over Costa Mesa create discussion

I have noticed an increase in flights going into Long Beach
(“Costa Mesa delves into flights issue,” Sept. 26). My husband’s a
pilot, and when they come over our community of Newport Crest, it’s
apparent that they’re landing at Long Beach airport. So let’s do
something to stop it.

These aircrafts fly directly over my house and I have never found
that the sounds of these jets are offensive in nature. The most
offensive sounds come from private, propeller-driven aircraft, police
helicopters and John Wayne Airport takeoff flights.
These flights into Long Beach, the aircraft or not under power,
they’re more than 4,000 feet up and the noise that they make is not
offensive. This is a phantom issue in Costa Mesa and you have
apparently cooks somewhere in this city that are trying to make an
issue out of something that is a nonissue.

I feel that we should act upon it immediately because the noise
level is increasing, not diminishing. It’s been my experience, from
our home, we’re unable to hold conversation on the telephone at times
and also to listen to our TV, so I think it should be something, not
only for us but for the community, to act upon immediately.

There is only one pressing issue, the airport, and we are probably
already doomed to become another Playa del Rey. But if John Wayne’s
expansion isn’t stopped what difference does Greenlight, the ficus
trees or growth mean? There won’t be a Newport Beach. It will be
definitely another Playa del Rey, with empty beaches, deserted and
condemned homes, few citizens left, city council candidates arguing
over whether two or three cars should be on the road and screaming
planes overhead drowning out what is called “the quality of life.”

Long Beach is saying, this spokeswoman, that the airport is too
small to cause such a noticeable increase. Well that’s wrong.
If you look at a sectional flight map of Orange County, it will
show arrows telling aircraft which way to fly to go into Long Beach
and all those planes that fly over Costa Mesa are actually flying
into Long Beach and that airport is big enough to accommodate a heck
of lot of big airplanes. I’ve been flying for 27 years.

I don’t think the city should be wasting its money at this time to
further investigate this thing. I don’t see that these flights are
anything that are terribly obnoxious. The airplanes are way up in the
sky and I don’t see why we should get upset about it.

I realize planes have to fly, but they are not at 4,000 feet. One
time, at night, I don’t know how many of them came by. One came by
and we could even see the blue -- and you know who that is. I guess
they have about 40 flights out of there or something now.
So all I care about is that they do not fly that low. I think it’s
very dangerous and, also, in reading your article about flights, it
seems like they don’t have to.
So, take an action now or later? I’d say now if we have any rights
to it, but I think all I’d care about is that they’re 4,000 feet up.
I don’t know how they’re going to land when they get over to Seal
Beach or Huntington, they’re going to even be lower and, of course,
we’re right up here next to the Santa Ana River.
