A call for music and artists

EYE ON ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT
Final Summer Concert
Music in the Park was filled to the gills last Sunday with reggae
fans on their feet enjoying the beat of Mongoose at Bluebird Park.
The grassy areas were packed blanket-to-blanket, the jungle gyms were
kid-to-kid and others were picnicking and socializing. The California
Dance Academy presented an exciting dance show as well. I think
practically all of Laguna was there.
It’s sad but true -- this Sunday wraps up the concert series with
the salsa sounds of Octavio Figueroa. It’s sure to be one of the
highlights of the weekend. You won’t want to miss your chance to
enjoy the last free concert of the summer. I think it’s great that
the Arts Commission and Music in the Park Inc. puts these on every
year.
The concert is at Bluebird Park on Bluebird Canyon Drive and
starts at 5 p.m. For information, call 497-0716, Ext.1
A call for talented artists
The city of Laguna Beach is holding a public art competition for
Treasure Island Park.
There will be three artists commissioned -- a parking structure
sculpture for $35,000; a sculpture or sculptures at the peninsula for
$55,000; and a northern beach access sculpture for $8,000.
The requirements are that the pieces created must fall within the
specifications for art nouveau or arts and crafts styles. The
competition is part of the city’s art in public places competition
that has brought beautiful pieces of art to Laguna for the community
to enjoy.
The deadline for submission is Sept. 16. For additional
information and specifications, call Sian Poeschl, arts coordinator
at 497-0722.
Independent and foreign films
Laguna Beach South Coast Cinema offers weekly weekend foreign and
independent films at 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
“Sordid Lives” has been playing and is truly a roar. The cinema is
at 162 S. Coast Highway. For tickets and information, call 497-1711.
Laughter and comedy at Brewing Co.
Laguna’s own Lynn Epstein will host her monthly comedy show at 8
p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18. The show includes a monthly lineup of
eight comics from Los Angeles and Orange County. This month is sure
to be a treat. Next month there will be one of the best, Epstein
promises. The Brewing Co. will feature women of comedy. Laguna Beach
Brewing Company is at 422 S. Coast Highway. For more information
about the comedy shows, call 499-2337.
Big waves still pounding LAM
There is scarcely a month left in the Laguna Art Museum’s amazing
surf exhibit, “Surf Culture.” The Art History of surfing has been an
ongoing event. The exhibit is incredible and features everything
about surfing and is a fun enjoyable exhibit you can see again and
again.
It also features concerts, lectures, movies and all sorts of surf
related event through the summer. Since it only lasts until Oct. 6
now is the time to dig it.
Laguna Art Museum is at 307 Cliff Drive. For more information,
call 494-6531.
Countdown to Goodall, Cougar Fund event
It’s getting closer and closer to the event you definitely won’t
want to miss. Naturalist Jane Goodall is making her first ever Laguna
Beach appearance at a fund-raiser on Sept. 18. She will be in town
for the Cougar Fund and Jane Goodall Institute benefit. Also in town
for the benefit is world-renowned wildlife photographer Tom
Mangelsen.
“I am so thrilled to have something of this caliber here and have
wildlife artists participate,” Susan Davis, Festival of Arts special
events coordinator said.
It will be an incredible evening including a presentation, silent
auction and artist exhibits, featuring some of the Festival of Arts
wildlife artists like Chris Hoy and Julita Jones among others. There
will also be a special VIP party.
For more information and ticket prices, call the festival box
office at 497-4514 or call 1-800-225-2277 or online at
www.tickets.com. The Festival of Arts is at 650 Laguna Canyon Road.
