The Corona del Mar boys club water polo team captured the San
Clemente 18-and-under tournament championship Sunday after defeating
Back Bay rival Newport Harbor, 12-9, in the semifinals and the host
Tritons, 10-2, in the finals at Saddleback College.
CdM, which improved to 26-6 this summer, toppled Santa Margarita
in the first game, 17-1, as Jason DiRocco (five goals) and John Mann
(four) led the way.
In Corona del Mar’s victory over Newport Harbor, DiRocco (four
goals) and Artie Dorr (four) provided the bulk of the scoring, while
CdM goalies Beau Stockstill (seven saves) and Tyler Brundage (three)
kept Newport at bay. CdM enjoyed a 7-3 halftime lead, before Newport
closed the gap to 9-7 after three quarters.
In the finals, Mann (six goals), Dorr (two), DiRocco (one) and
Ryan Moore (one) helped CdM build a 7-1 halftime lead before cruising
to the easy win. Stockstill (nine saves) and Brundage (three) shut
out San Clemente in the second and third quarters.
