Corona del Mar’s Pony 14-year-old All-Stars didn’t waste any time
scoring in their first game of the Pony District 3 Tournament at
Amerige Park Monday night against Los Alamitos B.
CdM exploded for nine runs in the top of the first and starting
pitcher Eric Eadington made it stand up with a complete-game
two-hitter, as Corona del Mar defeated Los Alamitos, 13-5.
Los Alamitos fought its way back to within 9-5, but CdM scored
another four runs in the seventh.
“After nine runs in the first, we were in control,” said CdM
Manager Peter Hauser. “Even after the three-run home run we still had
a nice cushion.
The nine-run first was highlighted by a two-run home run by Andrew
Dialynas, while Matt Riager, Shawn Maxwell, Shawn Mohler, Ryan Lance
and Matt Hauser also had hits in the inning.
Los Alamitos pitching then kept CdM’s bats quiet until the
seventh, when Jamie Kline walked to lead off the inning. Hauser then
lined a bullet off the pitcher’s glove that the shortstop fielded but
overthrew the first baseman, allowing Kline to score and Hauser to
move to third.
Riager, Maxwell, Mohler and Dialynas all followed with hits in
CdM’s four-run inning.
Eadington struck out 10 in seven innings for the win.
CdM’s win marks its 10th straight All-Star victory, dating back to
previous tournaments this summer.
Hauser believes the team is peaking at the right time.
“This is a very talented group of players,” he said. “Some have
played together since Triple A All-Stars so they know each other’s
personalities. We all hope this continues because it has been a fun
ride the last month. But (the district tournament) is what counts.”
CdM played Dana Point Tuesday. If victorious, they would play
Friday at 7:30 p.m. A loss would send them to a Thursday game at 5
p.m.
