Benedetti tops in golf event

Joey Benedetti of Huntington Beach held off a pair of contenders in a
hotly contested match last weekend to win the Boys’ Division of the
Southern California Professional Golf Assn.’s Foundation Toyota Tour Cup
Series.
The event was the first of a series featuring premier junior golf
events conducted on tour caliber golf courses.
The first event was held at Cottonwood at Rancho San Diego in El
Cajon.
Benedetti, 16, shot a first round 73 on the Ivanhoe Course and
followed that performance with a 4-under par on the Monte Vista Course,
giving him a two-day total of 140.
His score edged Aaron Davis of Palm Desert and Eric Rowson of Poway,
each of whom tied for second place by shooting a 141.
The Boys’ Division was open to players ages 12-18.
Benedetti has been invited to compete in the Toyota Tour Cup
Championships at the PGA of Southern California Golf Club at Oak Valley.
The event will be held the weekend of Sept. 14-15.
The Southern California PGA Foundation Toyota Cup Series of 2002
invites the top 200 juniors from Southern California and throughout the
nation to compete in the five-event series.
